I note in Dave McDonald's article in the latest Classic Wings on the Omaka AHC, by Easter there will be new displays in the museum of memorabilia - including personal items once owned by Manfred Von Richtofen.
That exciting enough, but also he says that a new WWI plane is to be added to the colection too. It's original, not a replica, and is the only one of its type in the world. Apparently it has remained almost untouched since WWI and is something of a time capsule.
I wonder what it can be? I look forward to finding out.
Anyway, with that great news over, i was wondering about the future of the museum, which intends to extend and take in later eras of aviation in the future.
I thought I'd ask for ideas, suggestions and thoughts of what you'd like to see displayed there in the future.
I think it's probably a give in that at least one of the replica Lancasters from the Dambusters film is to go into the AHC. Personally I think it'd be great as being connected with the film as well as the famous squadron and event, it'd be a big drawcard. Especially since none of the Lancs displayed in the world have the Special modfications to take the bouncing bombs.
But wouldn't it be nice if a second Lancaster replica could be retained there too but in standard kit, in No. 75 Squadron colours to represent NZ's own squadron? And here's another crazy idea, how about converting one of the film replicas to become a Manchester, as none exist anywhere and they played an important part in the war, and the deveopment of the world's best known heavy bomber. Many Kiwis flew in Manchesters, many men died in them too. It'd be a nice tribute to them.
Something else I'd like to see on the flying replica side is a WWI bomber type like a Gotha or HP.400. Does anyone know if serious consideration has ever been given to adding large replicas to the Omaka collection? The Vimy replicas in the UK have been successful, so it can be done.
I think a replica (if not the real thing) of a DH88 Comet would be neat too, in the colours of the one that Clouston landed at Omaka after flying all the way from Britain.
What are your ideas?
