Plane crash lands in Bay of Plenty10:55 AM Tuesday Jul 12, 2016 A plane has had to make a emergency landing after getting into trouble above the Bay of Plenty this morning. Emergency services were responding to reports of a single-engine aircraft with two people on board, running low on oil, as it approached Tauranga Airport about 10.45am. A Tauranga City Council spokeswoman said a light plane had reported engine problems about 10.45am. The plane made a precautionary landing at a paddock in Athenree. No injuries had been reported. It's not so much aeroplanes plummeting as the standard of journalisim. Errol

Exactly what I was thinking! "Crash" - seriously??? If the oil light comes on in your car while driving down the motorway and you have to make an unscheduled stop on the shoulder (where no stopping is permitted) is it news-worthy?
Isn't Athenree where Waihi Airfield is located? Lots and lots of flat land all around at least... I'll put money on them landing there and some yobbo "news" reporter has been sitting around monitoring airband frequencies.

Interesting to know what it was,I watched a Yak climb out from the airport and head up that way at that time, and shortly after every emergency vehicle in the Bay of Plenty headed down to the airport with sirens going. I wasnt thinking about Waihi Beach strip being Athernree,it often used to be very wet in the winter to land on.At Athernree theres a topdressing strip beside the main road if you know where to look.

some yobbo "news" reporter has been sitting around monitoring airband frequencies. That's a fancy newsroom! At the Chronicle we only had one which got fire/police!

So are you guys saying that there is a chance this paddock is actually an airstrip ?
I looked at Johnny's map and there aren't that many paddocks to the South. If the pilot had local knowledge he may have just opted to land on a strip

Isn't that old school stuff Zac ?
Some of the stories seem to be based on Facebook or Twitter comments. No need to leave the laptop, file the 'news' from home....

There appears to be an airstrip in a narrow field just to the north of the swampy estuary where it turns to the south by a local cafe the Surf Shop. Using Satellite view. Has a drier, worn strip down the centre of the narrow field.

Who else remembers the occasion when an RAAF aircraft on an exercise landed at Waihi Beach and couldn't take off again due surface conditions? Andover or Caribou?

Perhaps it did land in a paddock rather than the airstrip there... and was unable to take off for whatever reason.
