I didn't bother watching it, and probably won't even turn the telly on to see any of the Olympics, to be honest.
Were they claiming he was the first to fly, or as that link says just saying he was 'one of the first'? Which he was.

I don't think anybody said anything - at least not in a language I could understand.
It was during the song-and-dance sequence. The aircraft appeared to take off from inside the stadium, and then soar above Rio. Presumably a 'bird on a wire' or computer graphics.
Nice to see a pioneer aviator celebrated at such an event, even if there is controversy over what/when.

The (Australian?) commentator on the live Sky Sports coverage said something like "History records the Wright Brothers were first, but ask any Brazilian and they'll tell you it was Santos-Dumont". It was very diplomatic. And an unexpected thing to see!

Many Brazilians embrace the myth of Santos Dumont flying first the way many kiwis embrace the Richard Pearse myth. In this case they deny that the Wright Brothers claim to flight as well. It was an interesting touch in a frankly boring and uninspiring opening ceremony. I really cant handle 4 hours of Samba music... and "save the planet" preaching from the country that is deforesting the Amazon and hosts sailing in a cesspit... (No offence intended to our Brazilian forumites.. but my opinion on the Olympic organisers...)

Santos Dumont was the frist one, altough the brothers had done that before him it done was with catapult and divices helping them. The frist real autonomous fly, i mean with no use of any kind of devices was done by Santos Dumont, in France, and theres a lotta material about that. He suicided of sadness because airplanes were used to kill ppl in first world war.

As is well documented, the Wright brothers famous powered flights of 17 Dec 1903 were all made without the aid of a catapult. It was not until 7 September 1904 that the Wrights began using a catapult - (a weight and derrick assisted take-off device) - and then only as a means of making them independent of the weather and because of the small area of the field in which they were operating from.
