Can you do it in reverse? Take an original B&W and make it colour? That is actually what I thought you were doing when I saw the thread title

As you're using Photoshop you might like the AlienSkins plug-in which simulates various old school camera and film effects in both colour and b&w.

Like them all, but especially the last one - I'd have gone a tad looser on the crop (if you had the option) but I find it stellar.
