I first heard this rumour about 1975, came from a RNZAF HCM/LM whose name escapes me for the moment, The Air Base he mentioned I wrote down, I'll see if I can unearth that notebook which also has his name recorded.

Maybe of more interest, is the 5th pic in the link. On the Spitfire mk1,(also those markings were only used at the very beginning of the war)I have never seen RAF wing roundels located that far inboard on the wing, and is that a FW190A or the much stretched D...or just lots of photoshop...

It'd be great if it's true but it reminds me of the whole Spitfires-buried-in-Burma kerfuffle. Personally I suspect that 5th pic is a piece of wartime propaganda airbrushing and that the Spit may be an early PR type, the PRU being a law unto itself as far as cammo and markings were concerned?

Because everything reported in the "Daily Fail" is true! They might find the Nazi Gold Train buried there as well!

Apart from the two FW-190's over the water (which looks genuine) those black and white pics are horrible, horrible photoshopping. Still it's the Daily Flail/Fail, so no surprises there. The oddly roundeled spitfire though is much more interesting. Early PRU Spitfires did have the roundels far inboard, but that was usually accompanied by a pale blue or pink finish rather than the standard camouflage. The "G-X" coding isn't RAF standard either, and a quick bit of googling reveals it's spurious, as that particular Spitfire was captured and being operated by the Luftwaffe. Presumably they didn't have the right air ministry instructions when they repainted the roundels for propaganda filming purposes Same aircraft, genuine ww2 colour image: Possibly the same aircraft in this well known German propaganda shot: And with Luftwaffe markings: forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?104146-Luftwaffe-Colour-Spitfire-And-Bf-109-Real-Or-Fake&p=1651338#post1651338
