One of the truly great pilots the world has ever known, the legendary Bob Hoover, has passed away aged 94. He was perhaps second only to Eric 'Winkle' Brown for the title of world's greatest pilot.
So sad. RIP Sir

I first came to know of Bob when I was a kid, he would regularly show up in TV programmes like Ripley's Believe It, or Not; That's Incredible, and I think also More Real People, performing his amazing routines in his Aero Commander, with such fetes as pouring the ice tea into the glass while performing a roll, or his incredible dead stick aerobatics where he threw that reasonable big aeroplane round like the slickest of gliders. It was such TV appearances by Bob Hoover and also the incredible, late Art Scholl that I remember most from those early days of taking an interest in aviation, before I discovered RNZAF history and got truly hooked.
Bob was also a bomber pilot in WWII and a well known air racer in his P-51D 'Ol' Yeller'.

Those low level deadstick loops are something else! I don't know too many pilots who would even attempt it let alone make it look so effortless.
