The two Kawasaki P1 maritime aircraft have arrived at Whenuapai (I'm presuming for the Navy 75th birthday celebrations). They are smaller than I imagined and are painted a very pale light blue, in contrast to our own grey RNZAF Orions.

There is the one spot you can get a clean shot under the top 3 strands of barbed wire... Clean-sheet design.

I've always thought, "Your next generation P3K". Pity Kawasaki only built ten. Just to clarify, the JMSDF currently have 10 Kawasaki P-1s in service, that's not the total built or planned. Their plans seem to be currently for about 70 all up (replacing 90-odd P-3s). I think there are 33 ordered so far (including a bulk-buy batch of 20 last year, to be built over the next 4-5 years). In comparison, P-8 orders are expected to be about 150 at present (120-ish for USN, 12-15 for RAAF, 12 for India & 9 for RAF). The Indians might double their order, but you wouldn't put money on it given their procurement history. There may be additional orders from Norway and NZ (perhaps only 4 according to Mr Brownlee). It sounds like production may wind down in the early 2020s (there are news reports suggesting that last orders will have to be in next year)

I love the New Zealand flag in the windscreen shade of the P-1.

Yes, I'll pull out close-ups when I don't have 20 guests over for a BBQ!

I should have taken longer and read more than the Scramble list.

Well-spotted, Dave! That's very cool.
I think the P-1 is a neat design, it looks "right". Cool to see them here. I hope they come back for Ohakea next year.
