.... I thought I´d make a similar presentation in regard to HJG´s DC-8 simulations also and for the benefit of any interested FS enthusiasts here .... since these particular simulations have undergone significant, FDE, panel/gauge, and sound updates throughout 2016 .... as well as similar AIR NEW ZEALAND full fleet branding also.

We/HJG have now completed and released "VERSION 5.4" of our DC-8 simulations (including some minor panel/gauge adjustments too) during March 2015 .... along with a brand new and extremly high quality interior/exterior sound upgrade as well, and which has been compiled exclusively for use with these simulations and released just prior to Christmas (2016).

Among the extensive selection of real world textures for the HJG´s DC-8 simulations I´ve purposely represented "the entire AIR NEW ZEALAND DC-8-50 fleet" .... supporting each variation of livery and/or reconfiguration (minor though some of these were) applied to these aircraft between the December 1964 roll-out of our first aircraft (ZK-NZA) and the September 1986 retirement of our last aircraft (ZK-NZD) .... including its Seotember 1989 sale 1983 to KALITTA/AMERICAN
INTERNATIONAL AIRWAYS (N806CK).

Only a selected handful of these AIR NEW ZEALAND DC-8 texture/skins will be downloadable from the HJG website (PLEASE NOTE: THESE HAVE NOT YET BEEN UPLOADED), but, given that "full fleet" representation "HAS" been produced , by me, any of fleet members represented below and among others not illustrated, "ARE" available and "CAN" be obtained directly from myself and for which there´s "NO CHARGE AT ALL" .... of course

Nice job. Bit of a coincidence as I'm reading a book that talks about the change over from TEAL to Air New Zealand with the introduction of the DC-8 from the Electra. Also talks about the accident during a training flight when a training captain pulled back one throttle lever on take off to simulate (!) losing an engine on takeoff. However the sharp movement caused the reverse thrust lever to flick over as well causing the loss of control. 5 onboard and three survived.

Historic Jets Group do a fantastic job on the DC-8 and many other types, last time I ever seen the Air New Zealand DC-8 was at the PDL 1987 Singapore to Christchurch Airshow, that was a great weekend.

ABOUT THE AIR NEW ZEALAND DC-8-52 (ZK-NZB) ACCIDENT AT AUCKLAND INTENATIONAL AIRPORT ON JULY 4TH 1966 ....


I wrote (within my own HJG forum based article .... "AIR NEW ZEALAND DC-8 DIGEST" .... a new version of which I´m currently still draughting for re-posting) a little concerning this particular accident and as follows ....

Disaster ocurred on the afternoon of July 4th 1966. DC8 ZK-NZB (having accumulated only 2,275 hrs total flying time since delivery) was written-off during a trainning flight at Auckland International Airport. The aircraft was performing a series of touch and go landings during which simulated failed engine procedures were being rehersed. The accident occurred as the check captain rapidly retarded the # 4 engine throttle moments after lift-off .... generated inertial forces then suddenly caused the associated thrust brake lever to rise and enter the reverse idle detent. With insufficient altitude and only minimum control airspeed available immediately after rotation, recovery action was impossible before the aircraft banked and sideslipped uncontrollably, impacting the ground about its starboard wingtip, then cartwheeling and disintergrating for several hundred yards along the main taxiway and before a terminal full of shocked witnesses. 2 of the 5-man crew aboard the aircraft were killed in the accident .... which also hilited a potentially fatal flaw within the DC8 throttle system which had not previously been encountered during developmental/flight testing of the aircraft.

My own further study of this particular accident revealed that during the early 1960´s UNITED AIR LINES had experienced a similar "incident" with one of its own DC-8´s .... but .... which apparently went unreported in so far as industry-wide bullentins/alerts were concerned .... and which only became industry-wide knowledge "after" the AIR NEW ZEALAND accident.

Digging deeper still .... I also learned that the same AIR NEW ZEALAND check captain (whom was killed in this particular accident) had apparentlky experienced unwanted reverse thrust during a previous training flight, but, which he apparently disregarded as being "a potential trap" in the DC-8 throttle system .... believing he´d, himself, caused the incident. Fortunately the aircraft had more than sufficient airspeed and altitude within which to be recovered quickly as a result of this previous incident

I think the thrust lever system (or it might only have been the procedure for pulling on reverse) on all DC-8´s worldwide might have been modified after these events.

DC-8-52 ZK-NZB (C/N # 45751) was delivered to AIR NEW ZEALAND on August 10th 1965. Upon delivery to the airline it supported a 5 "white star" configured tail logo (similar to that of the DC-6 and L-188 ELECTRA between the late 1950´s/early 1960´s .... and was the only one of the 3 original DC-8´s to support this version of livery) with interim "TEAL" titles ....







.... but by April 1966, and following the formal rebranding of the airline to its new "AIR NEW ZEALAND" name and at the time of its loss, this particular aircraft supported the reconfigured 5 "gold star" tail logo configuration .... minus "TEAL" titles .... which formed the first definitive version of AIR NEW ZEALAND´s 1960´s era livery.

DC-8-52 ZK-NZB was W/O within 11 months of its delivery to AIR NEW ZEALAND.

Back at you Mark , I think the way we are cooking here, we may have New Zealand completely done in photo real with the quality autogen one can use as a road map, or simply just explore the country before you get home, Auckland is in the works again with Hi Res photo, that is a lotta work, I gotta quit putting my hand up for this AGN stuff ... Nahhh..
