Perhaps better to say that these Sunderlands were mainly employed in carrying passengers, mail, and some smaller freight items (in that order of priority) between Auckland and Fiji, and to Vanuatu, rather than just freight. However you have captured the Sunderland "look" nicely. David D

Agree entirely with David's comments. The painting is superb. Following their RNZAF service, two of the four served NAC on the Auckland to Suva regional service. As some of you know, my father delivered ML792 to New Zealand between October and 2 December 1944. There would no doubt have been four Sunderlands in the painting had it not been for ML794 being hit by RNZAF Lodestar NZ3514 over the Hen and Chicken Islands just before the Sunderland formation arrived over Auckland. ML794 was towed to Bream Bay by a launch after landing in the open sea and finally arriving in Auckland on 5 December. Amazingly both aircraft survived. The Lodestar landed at Whenuapai minus almost its entire starboard tail section. Along with the Sunderland, the Lodestar also joined NAC.

Thanks David I have now changed the description as you suggested. Funny thing happened after I had finished the painting a Ken Schwabe rang me up to say how much he like my calendar and as we talked (30-40 minutes) I told him that I had just finished this painting and he said it was his brother that was flying the fourth Sunderland that was hit by the Lodestar. Had a really enjoyable talk with Ken.

Love the painting! Is it coincidence, but all three aircraft have all four props "dressed"
