I'm just wanting some help on becoming an RNZAF Pilot, it is my dream to join up but I would love to know what extra curricular activities and NCEA marks I should be getting for year 12. I'll give you a run down on what I am already doing, but if there is anything else I should be participating in then please let me know. I take Math, Physics, English, Geography, Business and History. Outside of school I do Air Cadets and fly Gliders I went solo last year and have almost completed my QGP. I also do Duke of Edinburgh, I have only completed bronze, a broken knee from Rugby put me out of action, so I haven't been able to continue with silver or gold.
I have a few more questions too. Should I continue with Gliding? I have gained some pretty awesome awards through gliding which is why I like it. Should I get a degree at Uni? Will that give me a better chance at getting a spot as a Pilot?
I have the ability to get NCEA with Merit but is that enough? If there are any current RNZAF Pilots out there, that are able to share what they did in high school please let me know it would be much appreciated!
Cheers!

Welcome to the forum Razza. From what I see there you're well on track to get on a pilot selection course. I can see no harm in continuing with gliding, especially if you're enjoying it and doing well. Many of the best pilots started out as glider pilots.
I am sure other people here who have done the RNZAF pilot's course are more qualified to advise you, but I'd just like to say good luck, keep at it, and it would be great if you can update us with progress every now and then, whether in their RNZAF recruitment process or your gliding competition flying. Cheers.

Razza, you're doing the right things - at least it worked for me, a long time ago. If you're near Ohakea I can show you around 14 Sqn so you have some idea of what you might be in for. Send me a p.m. if you're serious.

That would be a great opportunity if you can take it Razza. It was getting shown around Hobsonville on a personal tour that really sealed it for me that the Air Force was the right career choice when I was 17.

A group of us school kids were flown to Woodbourne during 1963 in an RNZAF Hastings transport aircraft, with a stop over at Wigram. Because of that experience, about 50% of the boys that took that trip joined the RNZAF. I joined the Boy Entrant School at Woodbourne, some of the others joined other schemes, some survived (I didn't), and in 2014 we had a 50th anniversary reunion. isc

The experience has remained with me ever since!

I recall getting asked by a work acquaintance if I could go around to his place one evening and have a chat with his son. Malu Easthope was working down the Ansett ramp in ChCh in the late 80s and his boy was approaching school leaving age. I went around and spent an hour or two with the kid but he just wanted to be an Air Force pilot. He didn't know too much about the job or the recruitment process and of course this was pre-Internet days. Back then we sat down and chatted over a beer, not starred at a screen. I did ask Malu some months later how Jason had got on and I understand he had been accepted.
