John King of Aviation News sent me this:
Good morning Dave,
This arrived too late to be included in April as a letter to the editor, but would it help to have circulation in your system?
Kind regards,
John
Hello Mr. Editor
I would like to know if you have any info about two Mil Mi-8 Helicopters sold to New Zealand. I dont know exactly the date but possibly during earlier 90's. They had reg. numbers YS-1005P and YS-1006P. They were sold by Rogelio Peña, salvadoran.
I would like to have any contact with anyone who could have info o had worked unloading the helicopters from the IL-76 that brought them from El Salvador.
I would like to obtain photos or any info of the arrival to NZ and their unload from the IL-76 airplane.
Thanks.
Raphael B, from El Salvador.
Can anyone help? I have Raphael's email address.

I knew Dave Ashworth (the pilot of the Mil 8 which crashed on the West Coast) from when he was a jump-ship pilot at the Manawatu Skydiving Club and he often flew ZK-CGH up to Bridge Pa when the weather was crap for jumping in Manawatu, usually accompanied by a heap of Palmy North skydivers. The Saturday night parties in Hastings during those weekends were legendary. As were the hangovers on the Sunday morning out at the drop-zone at Bridge Pa.

These two where owned by Grant Beil, I think Heli Harvest was the name of the company. They were used in New Zealand for a few years, these pic's taken when they ferried to NZ, sometime in the late 90's I think? Interesting the CCCP rego and you can just see a hammer and sickle on the tail.

For anyone interested, I have just posted some recent photos of YS-1006P at Huka Falls along with some history in the NZ Aircraft Walkaround subforum (link). Does anyone else have photos of either 05 or 06 prior to 06 becoming a gate guardian? EDIT: I've just found a website (link) with airframe histories of both the ex-El Salvadoran Mi-8s which, amazingly, includes a photo of the ill-fated YS-1005P in Nicaraguan camouflage.

Found some old footage of when Grant Beil and his company Heli Harvest, (I think??) ferried these two Mil-8s across the Tasman from originally Russia to New Zealand.
Of note the Hammer and Sickle and CCCP markings, be grateful if someone had an idea of around what date this would have happened and do these beasts still exist in New Zealand?

28 December 1993, YBCG-YLHI-YSNF, 5.7 hours.
Neither helicopter is in NZ any longer; CCCP-25481 became RA-25481, which became ER-MHA, and was ultimately sold to become 9N-AHT. It crashed in Nepal in 2009. CCCP-70870 became RA-70870 and was ultimately sold back to the factory for refurbishment and presumably a second life.

At the time I did not take a lot of notice as they were not going to appear on the ZK- register. I think there was only one set of blades, so one was always parked up at Taupo. I dont know if they ever swapped. Then there was a Mil 17. C/N Built as Year History Filter new zealand - 3 NZ 95626 mi-8mtv-1 NZ ER-MHA 96121 mi-8mtv-1 NZ ER-MHH 96078 mi-8mtv-1 MD NZ ER-MHZ 3 C/N. I know one of them did leave but I'm sure it came back. Was one used on firefighting in Australia and then one did a long range rescue mission with one. I think all that was at the time when CAA said "Do what you like" and course we had the two from Central America and the Kamov. Interesting times. So if one of you would like to join the dots and you can be the resident expert.
