Does that mean it's too big to fit in at Devonport? Or is the home port a symbollic thing?

Does that mean it's too big to fit in at Devonport? Or is the home port a symbollic thing? Symbolic, each RNZN ship has an Honorary home port, generally related to the name of the vessel - Canterbury has Lyttelton, Otago has Port Chalmers etc. Te Kaha Is Napier, Te Mana Tauranga. They are all based at Devonport.

I thought that was the case. I seem to recall HMNZS Waikato's home port was Hamilton, which makes me laugh thinking of a frigate pulling in there.

You could probably get a frigate up the Waikato at the moment

um... Pukaki, Hawea, Manawanui, Taupo, Rotoiti, Te Kaha, Te Mana... Its not like its a radical new direction! (and these are historic names too...) what do they want, a great NZ name like "Black Prince"?... although probably "Royalist" would appeal to some...

If they are worried about how easy it is to pronounce Aotearoa, they might prefer some heritage British ship names like Diomede, Calliope, Amphion, Phaeton, Imperieuse, Sutlej, Magicienne, Melpomene, Indefatigable, Terpsichore, Charybdis, Pyramus, or even Doris!

I'd wind them up about it at WhaleOil, but I have been booted out of there so many times for upsetting the poor sensitive wee souls that I cannot be bothered creating fresh email addresses and nicknames to get back in there to post comments again.

I seen to recall some nations have a historical reluctance to ships after nations due to the propaganda value of sinking them. The UK has never had a warship call England or Britain.
Other classic RN ship names include Villa de Paris & Asia.

Hitler ordered the renaming of the pocket battleship Deutschland to Lützow because of the embarassment it would cause Germany if she was sunk in battle.

I think you'll find HMNZS Aotearoa is named in honour of the famous Split Enz Kiwi classic, Six Months In A Leaky Boat. I heard once that song was actually written about a tour served by one of the band in an RNZN Frigate, so I guess it makes sense they pay tribute back.

Have you heard of the Endeavour Peace Accord? Such support vessels are a non-threatening (but secure) location for diplomatic activities. So its good if you have provision for an Ambassador/Cabinet Minister-level person staying on-board.

166 m-long, 24,000 tonne, 1 VIP? VIP typically means a cabin of the same standard as the CO - i.e what you'd expect a LTCOL(E) to stay in. SaveSave

Other classic RN ship names include Villa de Paris & Asia. There is precedence here with HMS New Zealand which was a WW1 Battle Cruiser which was to all intents and purposes HMNZS NZ except there was no RNZN at that time. Anyway it was funded by the NZ Government and it's sister ship by the same arrangement was HMAS Australia!!!
