If they are worried about how easy it is to pronounce Aotearoa, they might prefer some heritage British ship names like Diomede, Calliope, Amphion, Phaeton, Imperieuse, Sutlej, Magicienne, Melpomene, Indefatigable, Terpsichore, Charybdis, Pyramus, or even Doris! Or HMS Maori

There is precedence here with HMS New Zealand which was a WW1 Battle Cruiser which was to all intents and purposes HMNZS NZ except there was no RNZN at that time. Anyway it was funded by the NZ Government and it's sister ship by the same arrangement was HMAS Australia!!! In both cases purchasing the ships was 'paid for' by the Dominion (by borrowing the money from guess where), but only the Australian Government paid for the running costs of their's.

Interesting to note that the loan raised by the NZ Government to pay for the ship was not finally paid down until 1944, 22 years after the vessel was scrapped.
Only a government would/could run their finances like that.

You raise a loan to purchase an asset (but that asset is not security for the loan), with a loan term in line with the level of repayments you want to make. The asset is disposed of before the loan is paid. Why would you re-negotiate/repay the loan? Any large organisation that borrows (and those that lend to them) for assets will look at existing debts/repayments when raising new debt (or re-scheduling it).

HMNZS Endeavour has docked for the last time at Devonport before it is handed to the scrappers and goes off to India. The replacement, HMNZS Aotearoa does not enter service till 2020. Am I missing something here? What is the Navy planning to do without a supply ship for the next few years?

So a replacement should have been ordered a few years ago?
I wonder which government stuffed that one up, eh?

Wonder how far they have got with construction so far. Usually would have seen some images of first metal cut or some form of construction. Just hope we don't have the same issues with Labours cheap other vessels.

Does the Navy have enough manpower these days to crew it?

you'd think a lot more would be joining up if they knew that. Am assuming this new ship will have a slightly bigger crew than Endeavour did.

Endeavour complement = 50 (apparently had 57 on board for final home-coming to New Plymouth) Aotearoa complemnt = 64 core crew + 11 'flight' crew if chopper embarked + 1 VIP + 8 'mission team' + 14 trainees. So 64 but could have up to 98 on board.
