This model represents the Jake surrendered to the RNZAF by the Japanese soon after the end of WW2. At the time it was decreed that all enemy aircraft should be painted in surrender colours of white with green crosses over the national markings. This aircraft was subsequently flown to the RNZAF base at Jacquinot Bay, New Britain by a Japanese pilot. It sank at its moorings overnight and apparently remains there to this day. Full build article will appear in Auckland IPMS Scale Mail newsletter and on Hyperscale.

Actually the Jake was flown to Jacquinot Bay by F/L (possibly S/L ) R H (Bob) Hickson, RNZAF, with an NCO aircrew by the name of Crookshanks (correct spelling) in the back seat, in mid-September 1945, from Malaguna in the Rabaul harbour shoreline. Crookshanks' log book is at the RNZAF Museum, and records this flight. He also recorded its Japanese "tail number" in the log book. 958-xxx something from memory. David D

Squadron Leader Bob Hickson, mid, was a Catalina pilot with, and Commander of, No. 6 Squadron and he flew for first Catalina into Simpson Harbour at Rabaul following the ceasefire and he and his cousin, RNZAF Medical Officer Dr. Bruce 'Bill' Faris, were two of three three New Zealanders present at the Japanese surrender at Rabaul to the Australian Brigadier General Ed Sheehan. 120,000 Japanese troops surrendered that day at Rabaul.

Very nice. I always dread working with white paint on kit builds.

Lovely, did you do a white wash over IJN camoflage to get that effect?

Great work! I love the final finish, the translucent effect is fantastic! It took me a second look to notice it. Very nice. I always dread working with white paint on kit builds. Imagine building Fletchers, Crescos and Hughes 500s. Ugh!

for white civies, always spray white undercoat, it'll save many headaches. I use Tamiya spray undercoat in a rattlecan it does wonders!
