NZ502 crashed at Blenheim on 15 November 1929. From the Auckland Weekly News, dated 4 December 1929. It's hard to believe they rebuilt it and it was flying again by mid-1931. Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries, AWNS-19291204-49-3

In those days it was normal to hold in spares "ample" stocks of complete mainplanes (already fabriced), tail surfaces, etc, as well as such commonly damaged items as undercarriage components and propellers. So what were termed "rebuilds" were often more along the lines of component replacement and then re-rigging. Nevertheless there must have been some awful ripping and crunching noises unleashed that particular day! Also intrigued by the inboard placement of the under-wing serial numbers - could this be a local re-paint of a previously installed unpainted spare? David D
