And the crashes keep coming...
Nelson Ezell, who runs Ezell Aviation out of Breckenridge Airport, crashed while test flying Joe Thibodeau's Sea Fury N254SF.
Nelson is in hospital with serious but not critical injuries, and his passenger suffered a broken leg and lacerations.
"Sea Hawk" (Race 21) is R-3350 powered, and seems to have an unenviable reputation for appearing in accident statistics.

Bugger. Seems to be too many accidents of late. Glad no one was critically hurt in this one

I guess it is a combination of more warbirds being restored and a gradual decline in the experience of those flying them. The air force had a similar problem when most of the experienced instructors departed and those coming through the system didn't have the same feel for the aircraft.

True, but power loss at the worst time can be out of the most experienced pilot's abilities and they can make mistakes too at critical moments eg. Mark Hanna

And Nelson Ezell is hardly an inexperienced pilot. In fact he used to own the accident machine.

I wasn't referring specifically to this incident, but more a general observation.

Statement from The Ezell Family
"We do not want to speak on the incident at this time as the investigations by the NTSB and the insurance companies have not been conducted to determine the actual cause. There was an apparent loss of power during the landing approach to the runway and that is currently all that is known.
Dustin Mayfield, the passenger on board, has been released from the hospital with an arm injury. Nelson has been classified as critical stable by the medical staff and is still in the ICU. We can tell you that Mr. Ezell sustained numerous injuries and will require only surgery on his right arm and his left eye lid at this time. Today, he was cleared to start undergoing those surgeries, which is a positive sign. The plan is to complete the surgeries before removing the breathing tube and have him fully awoken by this weekend. We ask that flowers not be sent at this time, as they are not allowed at the ICU. We are thankful for all of the love and support and we welcome your prayers always."
