All my previous pic's have been lost to Photobucket, sadly we will loose some of the great pic's as the posters don't come here anymore. I'm slowly reposting some of mine that where lost. Been into rc aeroplanes for a few years now, never owned or even flown a fuel powered rc plane. In the time I have been doing this have seen technology leap over itself especially batteries, started out with nicad batteries then lithium ions and now lipos. With the improvement of power source the models have become smaller, lighter and much better performers, I have a passion for these Ultra Micro (UM) rc planes. I was a plastic modeller before getting into rc, my plastic past is influencing my foam future. My first UM that doesn’t get in the air so much these days, an oldie but a goodie. You will noticed she is armed, some aggressive L4 Grasshopper drivers fitted Bazookas to there aeroplanes one chap even destroyed a few tanks with them. Charles Carpenter probably the most famous, see link below. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Carpenter_(lieutenant_colonel)Snoopy on the tail of the Red Baron. Not Von Richthofen’s scheme but similar, used pastels to weather the ribs and cowl. My second UM that I didn’t fly much when I first got her as she was way too twitchy for my ability. A while ago the SU26 got a Su27, her bigger brothers, paint scheme.

Spitfire painted up as Brendan Deere's Mk IX. The mighty P51 seen below with a pic of the only Mustang to be painted in camo in Australia. The Mustang was also made in Australia by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation. My favourite WW II fighter this one received Royal New Zealand Airforce markings. The white stripes make her much easier to see against the trees. Another that I favour the “Wooden Wonder” painted as an Aussie Mossie!

The Corsair got a bit more aggressive nick name “Whistling Death,” I look forward to seeing the day when a full size Corsair wears RNZAF markings Another American radial powered beast, this Thunderbolt painted in the not so commonly modelled Royal Airforce markings of an aeroplane that flew in the South East Asian Conflict. Keeping an American/RAF theme painted as a British coastal command B17.

The little jets use a small 30mm ducted fan unit run on 2 cell lipo batteries. The little Mig 15 was looking a little worse for wear so she got a bit louder scheme actually from a later model Mig 17. A4 in a short worn scheme the Royal New Zealand Airforce purchased some Royal Australian Navy Skyhawks and for a brief time these machines had RAN camo with RNZAF roundels. Scratch built the undercart just for looks, all my UMs which had retractable gear are hand launchers and belly landers, not only for looks but for less drag. This one was a big job not only the paint but also the mods, wanted a FA18 Hornet so modded an EFlite Habu to a Hornet. As you can see added the twin fins, thought about it but decided to leave the wing so not 100% scale. The Royal Australian Airforce painted a Hornet with an indigenous Aboriginal scheme from the local people of the area where RAAF Williamtown the Hornets are based. A Viper as a Kiwi, painted in the scheme the F16s would probably have arrived in the country if the deal had gone ahead. As she came out of the box. And now, the mottle look to the paint came about by leaving her under an open window and some sprinkles of rain got on her. Natural weathering that I sort of don’t mind seeing as the scheme is quite bland?! Oh and yes hard to see as well!

Please, "Airforce" (no such word) should be split into its respective parts. That is why the abbreviations of the RAF, RNZAF, RAAF, RCAF, USAF. etc, always end in AF. Besides, the abbreviation RA was claimed by the British Army a very long time ago (for Royal Artillery). Sorry to bring this up, but is has to be said. Won't mention it again. David D

Been interested in STOL and bush type aeroplanes of late, decided to convert my 670mm span foam Piper Cub in to a STOL Cub. Added Flaps, large tundra wheels and vortex generators, not sure if they will have that much effect at this scale but you would think with the quantity I have added (36) they may have some effect? Seeing I added a few over the top mods decided she needed an over the top paint job, the Tiger Cub Tiger needs teeth hand painted some teeth copied off some P40 decals I had. Also added rear struts to lock up the rear empennage and a larger tail wheel. My Cub family.

My latest repaint and mod, the B25 Mitchell served in the Royal Australian Air Force towards the end of WW II. Some later versions had a modification fitting twelve .50 cal Browning machine guns with eight in the nose and four in fuselage mounted cupolas. The RAAF never had this “strafer” version, I just couldn’t avoid doing mine with all those guns. With the front turret facing forward this machine must have been one of the most heavenly armed aeroplane of the conflict? Happy to be corrected as maths is not my thing, based on five hundred and fifty rounds per minute with all fourteen guns this meant effectively one hundred and thirty individual rounds per second could be brought to bare, imagine being on the wrong end of that, struth! With all those guns had to add the teeth, the decals are various 1/32nd scale, teeth from a P40, the name “Struth” a bit of Aussie slang. Moved the turret to the forward position of the later model B25s added the rear gunners canopy, wasn’t happy with the rear guns look cut it down and added a kanvas cover, this is a small piece of tissue soaked in CA. With the scale details have added a bit of weight, the ultra micros enemy, have modded a few of these, I’m happy to live with a bit of performance loss for a better look. All I need to do is weathering then fly the wings off her!

Re-painted this one on the first high performance warbirds to fly in New Zealand since the 1950s. (Well after Harvards of course!) In the 80's Sir Tim Wallis imported this machine into New Zealand and had her painted in the markings of one of the Mustangs that flew with the three Territorial Squadrons that served in the RNZAF. Have modelled her as a bit of a triple tribute, Sir Tim Wallis a legend of the warbird scene. Ray Hanna, more on him soon and the mighty Canterbury Crusaders my Rugby team which, this year won their seventh Super Rugby competition this year! The late Ray Hanna a true legend aviator and star pilot of many a movie, one of my favourite movie scenes from “Empire of the Sun” Ray Hanna flies past a young kid waving. So I made my little pilot so he can wave, has a simple wire link off the rudder to his arm. Took the photo at a slow shutter speed hence the blurred arm. Ray Hanna scene “Empire of the Sun.” Ray Hanna waving from Mustang Warbirds over Wanaka 1996.

Here’s another Mustang this time raised the back and back dated her to a C model or Mk III. The Royal Australian Airforce had both P51 Cs and Ds in Italy during WW II. This one painted in the markings of a 3 Sqn aeroplane. Here she is before paint. Here she is this morning painted but pre weathering, the three Sqn P51s had the southern cross on their tails. And this afternoon after adding weathering using pastels. Here she is with a stock one, mods included obviously raising the back, cockpit detail, including seat, radio and instrument panel, paint and moving the battery hatch from underneath to on top, much better access. Will maiden soon, still a bit more to do, painting the exhaust and tape to protect the underside when belly landing.

Bit further down the track, slapped on some paint, detailed exhausts and cockpit, nearly ready for maiden, will notice not finished around the base of the tail plane , the EFlite Mustang is a bit notorious having a decalage issue, so this is just taped rather than glued for now, once I fly her will sure this up. The long nose with the smaller canopy gives her a bit of a streamlined look, she has that looks fast sitting still look to her, what-da-ya reckon? I used the smaller UM Mustang canopy, scratch built the seat and dash. Maiden check, got her up and down okay but way too much down angle on the tail plane, climbed like a home sick angle heading for the moon! Sorted out a bit more up angle on the tail plane and will fly again, nearly there……

Given the medium, your colour schemes look pretty good, mate. Like the Ca-15 conversion. If only someone would do a full size one, like the guy building a Martin Baker MB.5 out of a Mustang in the US.

Although John Marlin's MB.5 isn't perfect, I think it's pretty neat. www.facebook.com/CA15Kangaroo/I posted that same link a couple of posts up so she looks like a static full size replica, do you know any more about her, where is she can you pop along and look her over? Not surprising I guess the Martin Baker machine very similar to the CA-15, logical I guess as technology of the time would have been similar. I wonder if the CAC chaps and Martin Baker chaps ever compared notes? They are very similar, fusy shape, canopy, fin etc. The Martin Baker replica is amazing! johnmarlinsmb5replica.mysite.com/photo3_2.html

Another one done and dusted, have flown her a fair bit before finishing her off, flies nice, like most warbirds you have to fly her in for landing, that big radiator housing is great for both hand launching and landing on! Decals, there are many available for Aussie modellers out there, choose mine from a 1/32nd scale set for a Boomarang. Can’t go on enough about Micro Sol and Micro set for applying and setting decals. Micro Sol brushed onto to where you want them to sit, allows you to move them to the right spot, Micro set brushed on after they have dried hardens them up and sits then down so they look like they are painted on, the stuff won’t damage the foam or paint and water wash up! Here she in full trim pre weathering with a couple of books I used for reference. Weathering using pastels, highlighted the panel lines used mainly black with a little brown and grey in the exhaust stain. Being a prototype she would have been clean and looked after so subtle apart from the exhaust stains to show she has been operating at high revs, 450mph! Next project, I have the "Cadillac of the skies" in my blood at the moment so a P51 but this time a fast one, there's an obvious hint??!!

Have always been intrigued by STOL aeroplanes and have been watching some clips of the Valdez, Alaska STOL competitions. So I decided to take to my little span Cub. Added the paint job, big wheels, votex generators and flaps a while back, recently leading edge slats and wing fences, finally some lights which make her great for those twilight evening flights. The wingtip fences, these made a big difference to the stall speed, she has lost roll rate but will live with this to land slower. It’s a pity I can’t really measure how much difference all this has made but I can just tell she flies slower and with more control at slower speeds, all and all a success!
