NanoGirl Coming to Wings Nationally and internationally acclaimed NanoGirl will be entertaining the crowds at Wings over Wairarapa Air Festival 2019 as part of the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) activities on the ground. NanoGirl is an explosive, engaging, entertaining and educational live performance programme. NanoGirl was created by co-Founders Joe Davis and Dr Michelle Dickinson MNZM. A social enterprise, NanoGirl exists to inspire, educate and empower through STEM. Their work is funny, engaging and inspirational. The way they teach is very clever; they bring science and engineering to life in the coolest ways possible. You get so wrapped up in the performance, leave with a big smile on your face and more than that you’ve learnt something. Saturday Night Show - UK Airborne Pyrotechnics For the first time ever we will be staging a Saturday Night Show on 23 February 2019. The sky will be lit with night flying from various aircraft, the headline act being Airborne Pyrotechnics. This UK glider team travel the world displaying their gliders, LED lighting is attached to the gliders and they set off pyrotechnics from their wing tips as they fly. All Saturday Day tickets receive complimentary entry into the Saturday Night Show. Don’t miss out! Need Transport? Our partner, Tranzit have some options for you! STEM Inspiring Youth to Fly Wings over Wairarapa Air Festival 2019 have developed a new initiative to engage youth. Because the ‘practice day’ on the Friday of Wings is typically quieter, the team agreed it would be a great opportunity to provide a STEM based learning experience outside the classroom at Hood Aerodrome. Working with REAP Wairarapa, every school in Wairarapa has been invited to this Schools Day for free, and with the generosity of Tranzit and Earthcare Environmental, who have provided transport options that make the idea a reality. Not only will students be able to learn about the science and engineering around flight, but there will be interactive and engaging displays, demonstrations and hands-on activities. Most activities will be ‘free-flow’ but limited spaces in workshops will be offered in rocketry, digital fabrication and coding, circuitry workshops, and students will be able to talk to experts with a range of aviation experience such as engineers, pilots and technicians. In response to a looming shortage of pilots and other STEM related careers, students will have opportunities to engage with organisations and programmes that provide aviation training, such as Massey University, School to Skies, ATC, Air Scouts, Young Eagles and Youth Glide. As well as our Careers and Training Marquee, the New Zealand Defence Force will be out with its Recruitment Bus with people to inspire and engage. On stage there will be rolling presentations, and while this is going on, some teachers will be participating in professional development sessions. These activities will be available to everyone on Saturday and Sunday of the Air Festival as well. If you want to find out more get in touch with us. A Sneak Peak Here's just a little bit of what is coming.Corporate Tables Our Saturday Corporate Tables are sold out! There are a few remaining for Sunday 24 February 2019. If you’d like to secure one of these book now.

Wings over Wairarapa Press Release 6 December 2018 Wings Tickets FlyingWings over Wairarapa Air Festival 2019 tickets are flying out the door. Ticket sales are up 35% compared to the same time last Festival. There have been significant ticket sales from the UK, North America and Australia. Saturday Corporate Tables and Gold Passes have all sold out months in advance and there are limited hospitality options remaining for Sunday 24 February. Wings General Manager, Jenny Gasson puts the huge increase in ticket sales down to a number of things. “The word is getting out about our new initiatives for 2019; people are getting excited and want to experience these for themselves.” “In 2019 we’re showcasing interactive and engaging displays, demonstrations and hands-on activities. We are offering workshops in rocketry, digital fabrication and coding, circuitry workshops, and people will be able to talk to experts with a range of aviation experience such as engineers, pilots and technicians.” “We’re also lucky to have extensive access to The Vintage Aviator aircraft collection, which will have a much bigger presence in 2019; there will be aircraft there that have never been seen before.” “The icing on the cake is our Saturday Night Show. The skies will be dazzling with aircraft lit for night flying and feature act ‘Airborne Pyrotechnics’ from the UK, who will be performing their world famous glider night flying. They have two Grob 109b motor gliders that have thousands of coloured LEDs attached to them and are armed with 4.5kg of pyrotechnics on each wing tip which the pilots set off as they fly.” “We think that many people who’ve been before have realised that this show is going to be a completely new experience, and our new look Air Festival is attracting new audiences, our ticket sales clearly show this.”

Wings over Wairarapa Press Release 17 December 2018 Wings Brings The Vintage Aviator WWI Collection in 2019Wings over Wairarapa Air Festival 2019 will feature a major demonstration of The Vintage Aviator (TVAL) WWI collection. Current plans are for up to 30 aircraft to be in the air and on the ground as a major part of the Air Festival weekend, showcasing WWI aircraft from 1914 through to 1918. Wings Display Coordinator John Lanham says there is nowhere else in the world where such a variety of aircraft from the dawn of air combat can be seen in such numbers and unique combinations. “This will include aircraft flying chronologically from the beginning of WWI to the end. All our flights will be accompanied by a rich commentary.” These include the British single-seater Be12 and the British two-seat biplane bomber DH4, both of which have never appeared at a public air show before. Depending on weather conditions SE5a, RAF British biplane fighter aircraft, and RAF Be2 biplanes will hopefully appear in the sky at once and if the weather complies a 1916 RFC fighter FE.2b will join them. “Wings is very proud to showcase the collection to New Zealanders and our many international visitors”. “These magnificent aircraft on display in our flying programme will be a visual spectacle, a salute to the courage and sacrifice of the early aviators and a timely commemoration of the centennial of Armistice Day in November 2018”. *Vintage aircraft flying is weather dependent TVAL’s primary aim is to build WWI aircraft, engines and propellers to the same exacting standards to which they were originally made over 100 years ago. TVAL endeavours to maintain absolute authenticity with the original design. The company makes both airworthy and static aircraft for museum display and private collections. TVAL’s facilities in Wellington and at Hood Aerodrome in Masterton are capable of every aspect of early aircraft and engine construction imaginable. Their most valuable resource is the skilled craftsmen - specialized woodworkers, fabric workers, welders and machinists, experienced in the complexities of these wood and fabric covered aircraft. This is the first time since WWI that these aircraft are being produced in a factory setting, although they utilise the most modern technology to increase accuracy and reduce labour costs. Working relationships with other restoration facilities and museums in Europe, Australia, Canada and in the USA assist TVAL in sourcing information as well as technical data and original parts for duplication and reproduction. I understand TVAL aren't taking any of their Masterton-based aircraft over to Omaka at Easter, so Wings Over Wairarapa is the only time you'll see their reproduction and restored aeroplanes taking part in a public display this summer/autumn airshow season; and I've heard through the grapevine that TVAL have been given a solid two-hour slot in the program on each day.
And as a couple of TVAL's Fokker triplanes are based at Hood, I guess this means unfortunately the days of the mass-display of DR.1 triplanes at Classic Fighters has ended for now.
I hope the weather at Wings Over Wairarapa is calm enough for them to fly the Hanriot HG1 during their display. That has only been flown twice before at their open flying weekends and that was back when Gene was running the show. I understand it has been in the air a couple of times since then, although I don't know who was actually flying it. It would be amazing for the average Joe general public to actually see a rare aeroplane like that in the air and I'm sure that more than a few aviation enthusiasts who haven't yet seen it fly would love to see it in the air as well. I've been fortunate enough to see it flying once at the end of a flying weekend, when Gene asked the spectators if there were any special requests and somebody asked if he'd fly the Hanriot, so he got the boys to pull it out of the hangar and fuel it, then he took it up and displayed it.

DH.4? Looks like I'm going to Hood. They've flown the DH4 virtually every flying training weekend they've had this year, so it would appear they have managed to sort out the engine problems they had for some time after they first got it. So I'd say the DH4 will almost certainly be taking part in TVAL's 2-hour flying display slot on each day of the airshow, along with virtually everything else they have at Hood which is flyable. Naturally, weather (and wind) permitting.

Isn't the wind part of the weather? Does the DH-4 have a Liberty? If so, that must be one of two(?) operational globally?

The DH-4 is powered by a Liberty engine. It sounds bloody awesome too. They use a Hucks Starter to crank it over.
And as for the weather, often the weather can be fine for flying most aircraft at Hood Aerodrome, but the wind can be just a wee bit too high for some of the WWI aeroplanes.

An article in the print edition of the Wairarapa Times-Age dated 26th December (today) quotes John Lanham and says that TVAL will be flying up to 30 aeroplanes during their display at Wings Over Wairarapa, including the DH.4 and the Be.12, amongst others, naturally weather-dependent.
