Hello everyone, I'm looking to acquire photos, contacts, history etc. for an aviation film article I'm proposing for Air Classics magazine. Apart from the NZ Wings article from 1982, theres never been an article published before on this NZ/Aust produced adventure film to the best of my knowledge anyway, and I'm hoping a new article will spark a new interest in the aviation aspects to readers in the US and elsewhere. Aircraft based in Queenstown in 1980-81 were: C-47A: NZ3518 / ZK-BEU
Mount Cook Cessna 206: ZK-EFI
Hughes 300: ZK-HHQ & ZK-HGD
Hughes 500: ZK-HKM & ZK-HMB
Bell 206B: ZK-HSA
The article is hinging on what materials can be gathered so if anyone is interested in helping with either photos, past contacts or history please email me via my website: www.uswarplanes.netCheers Simon D. Beck Christchurch

I recall hearing that one of the helicopters was flown by Sir Tim Wallis for the film. Can anyone confirm that? If true, he may have more info, Simon.

According to the credits, Rex Dovey was the helicopter pilot and the stills photographers were Barry Payne and Roy Emerson.
There is Roy Emerson Photography in Auckland, you'd think it was the same one???

Lee Tamahori was the boom operator, I guess you have to start somewhere!

There were of course more than one helicopter pilot, as the trailer shows scenes of two choppers in shot, filmed from a third
'
Great film by the way.

Good point Dave. I wonder why the other helicopter pilots weren't credited?

Hi all, yes overseas it was renamed Treasure of the Yankee Zephyr, that cover looks to be Eastern Europe maybe?
Its just been released in blu-ray in the same region believe it or not!
Credits in the 1980s were very short and only included the basic crew involved, today they even credit the security guards at the gate.
Alpine Helicopters were the main aviation co. involved and even owned the C-47 at the time. Pilots were Rex Dovey and Don Spary (Chief pilot), thats Don in the Jet Ranger with George Peppard. I think maybe Hannibal Hayes might have been the Hughes 300 pilot but am not sure?
Unless I hear otherwise I think Sir Tim was not involved in the actual flying aspects of the film.
Does Dave Bates or Ian Coates still frequent these pages? I acquired photos for them years ago but need to renew the permissions they originally gave me.

Thats great. Could I get a direct email from Dave? my publisher might need the permission on paper. He can email at sdbeck AT caverock DOT net DOT nz. I have just started as an Aircraft Ground Handler at ChCh Airport so don't have time to reply as quickly as I used too.

Might have been quite a different story if the Yankee Zephyr was a Tupolev Tu-2 and they sent Mil-24 Hinds out! The Tu-2 image they scabbed onto the poster is of the one preserved at Monino.
