From VolumeTwo of my trilogy For Your Tomorrow - A record of New Zealanders who have died while serving with the RNZAF and Allied Air Services since 1915:
Sat 2 Oct 1943 MEDITERRANEAN AIR COMMAND Mail run from Gioia delle Colle, Italy, to base 683 Squadron, RAF (Luqa, Malta - 248 Wing, Malta) Spitfire PR.XI EN670 - took off at 1000, and on completion of a photographic reconnaissance over Larissa in Northern Greece landed at Brindisi to refuel. After departing Brindisi with sufficient fuel for 90 minutes flying, encountered a violent and unexpected thunderstorm which reduced visibility to a few yards. Although heard on r/t near Sicily and plotted by Malta radar, nothing further was heard of EN670, or its pilot, who is commemorated on the Malta Memorial. Pilot: NZ415288 Flt Lt Jack Bruce BURNET, RNZAF - Age 27. 550hrs. 69 ops.
