According to the Museum's website, it was converted to a TT in Sept 1944, and stayed on the books until 1978, when it was retired from gate guard duties (also in TT colours) = 34 years, then it was restored firstly as a Tug, before becoming "521" - what year was the scheme change/conversion done?

Let's make it happen Anthony. You make museum quality models too so it's the perfect scenario, and models set up in dynamic ways capture the younger imaginations so much better than a static full sized aeroplane does.

what year was the scheme change/conversion done? It was about 1986. But it wore several different schemes as a gate guard at Te Rapa. This current would be its longest lived coat of paint.

1984 I think she was converted to WW2 configuration, according to Baz.

"This current would be its longest lived coat of paint."
Only if they sanded the previous schemes off. If they over-painted them........

Except the present/current management hate models, and would rather have nothing than well presented models.

I wonder why? I was involved many moons ago with building models for the new Museum in the 80's. Some aircraft types will never make it into the Museum, simply because they don't exist anymore. But some beautifully presented RNZAF models(and I am saying not get just anyone to build them) in say 1/48 would be quite eyecatching and even appeal to the young ones....and sell more at the shop??
Maybe I am wrong? I always thought it a shame when they all vanished

I like to see well built models in a museum - the ones in the new warbirds hangar at Ardmore make an interesting addition to the aircraft..... unfortunately, museums seem to get all sorts donated, many made to a very average standard.

Keep the Avenger how it is, except maybe un-fold the wings. I would say convert one into a target tug if they had another, but in this case I think it is more important to have one preserved as an example of one where people actually flew combat in

Here's a thought...
Why not paint one half with the TT livery and the other half in WW2 livery😉 That way you are covering most of its history in one...

We stripped her down to bare metal in 1979/80 so the TT scheme applied by the RNZAF S & S team is the only one on there under the WW2 scheme.....so in a way although you can't see it the TT scheme still holds the record for time in service!!

So what you're saying is it's already in a TT scheme, only it's under the current scheme. Perfect, leave it as is.

Yeah Nah!! make it 50/50. If the lanc can have two different codes then why can't the TBF have two colours? It's still telling a story, they could move it around so that you only see WW2 or TT sides with story to boot.

The AF Museum has a huge colection of models in various scales in storage. Hopefully as part of the new building displays being designed many of these will see the light of day. They certainly have a part to play in representing aircraft that are missing from the collection.

Thanks for that Don, a very helpful answer.
I really like the idea of a 1/32 target tug diorama as suggested by Dave H. I have been wanting to build a 1/32 RNZAF P-40...

I seem to remember a few 1/48 models where the cafe is now that were made to a high standard, and in RNZAF markings.
There was also a huge amount of mainly 1/72 scale kits, in the reserve hangar that were pretty average?
