Did you see on the news tonight that the US Marine Corps has returned to Wellington after a ten year absence, where they have resumed their role in guarding the US Embassy. Nice to see,
I wonder how many of them are stationed in NZ. It would be an awesome posting compared to some of the places they could have been sent to.

I think its awesome to have them back, even if only a handful as the presence of US Marines in Wellington is a great tradition. These guys create a great impression with their impeccable discipline and smart uniforms, I dont think it matters that there are only 6 or so, it is largely a ceremonial role anyway. Welcome back "The Proud"!

Bruce ...could not have expressed it better...It will give the greens ulcers that their military presence will make us some sort of target!! The anti american sentiment is this country is still very strong...not so in 1942 ..Wellington when they arrived to protect our shores in return for us agreeing to leave our experienced 2nd division in the middle east...I make no apoligies for being very pro australia,us ,uk and canada in that order!! This govt is determined to transform us to a non aligned banana republic ...God help us

On ya, Steve: I admire anyone's who is as anti-Clark as I am - burn the witch! ;D
And don't even get me started on the likes of Nacho Tandoori and some (not all) of those Greens!
A mate of mine used to work as a chef at the US Embassy in Canberra, and she was saying most of the US Marines posted somewhere safe like Canberra hate it, because there's not enough danger and action: they'd rather be in a war-zone like Somalia or Baghdad!

Yes, regarding the greens, Rod Donald was ok. But then any dead politician is a good politician. I can't think of any other green party members wotrth speaking of though. All nutters.
Do other Embassies in NZ have military units posted to them? Any Coldstream Guards at the British Embassy, etc?
