I am tracing through my 3x gr grandfathers J.C.L. Carter's military career and have recently seen that he was appointed as Captain to the Napier regiment of militia in 1863. Does anyone have any information of this regiment?

Various areas set up their own militia as the British Imperial Regiments began to withdraw from New Zealand. You can read a lot about them through Papers Past. the officers were usually from the British Regiments who took their retirement in New Zealand. Many of the Napier men are buried in the old hill cemetery.
