Many WWII aircraft were painted with a Zinc Chromate primer and so naturally the faithful restorers of warbirds also use Zinc Chromate primer on the airframes they are rebuilding. When I was chatting on Monday with Paul McSweeny of Pioneer Aero Ltd at Ardmore he said after years of purchasing and using locally sourced Zinc Chromate primer on their restorations, the chap from the local paint supplier admitted to him that for some years now due to various Health And Safety regulations, their primer they have continued to market as Zinc Chromate actually no longer has either Zinc or Chromate in the mixture!!!
I mean, WTF???
Paul said, "So it's just green paint? If I wanted green paint I'd have ordered green bloody paint!"
Pioneer now bring their Zinc Chromate promer in from the USA where it still includes Zinc and Chromate in the recipe! We thought this is worth telling others about, because how many people have been thinking they are buying a product as advertised and have been getting an inferior product under the same name? It's not right.

Interestingly enough I ran into a similar problem a few years ago. We use Strontium Chromate primer over a PreKote pretreatment. I bought what I thought was the last of the Altex 3094 paint that had the active ingredients we needed. I now understand that after years of complaints they have somehow managed to go back to the old/original formula. The stuff they have marketed for the past few years was 3094 CF, the designation for Chromate Free. Sure enough, they now list the Strontium Chromate as available as an aviation primer again. This is a New Zealand company as well. We have always had great service from them. By using this primer with the PreKote we have avoided the drama of acid wash etch and alodine. It is not available in rattle cans that I know of but is far superior anyway. Actually Jared was using it just last weekend on a Cherokee he is doing. It is a two-pot system and the previous Chromate Free stuff was more yellow in appearance. The CF stuff would be completely ineffective on Alclad as far as corrosion control and pre-treatment. altexcoatings.co.nz/frontend/products.cfm?page=product&productid=28&marketid=0

WTF. Green paint sold as zinc chromate primer? Oh no, just think of the past warbird restorations that may have that fake paint on them.

No doubt the paint companies were still charging the ‘ zinc chromate’ price for it!

That's incredible. I mean this is used for it's corrosion preventative properties and to give a good key for the top coats(although in some interior places the primer is it!) I'd be asking if there's any corrosion issues are they going to pay for the repairs?
