Hello - My Dad worked on the Transland Ag-2 at George Wing's Hi-Shear Corporation in the 1950's. I've seen blueprints of the plane on the walls of my parent's house all my life. I only learned of the fate of the (prototype #1 of 3) Ag-2 today : all-aero.com/index.php/55-planes-t-u/11137-transland-ag-2... With 577 hours on the clock, N8330H was sold to Charles Chalking in Uruguay in 1962. The aircraft was flown to the South American country, where it was registered CX-AYC in May 1962. Under the name of Azucarera del Litorial SA of Paysandu, it flew some 224 hours on sugar fertilizing until 31 December 1963, when it was placed in storage. The aircraft spent 28 years in storage before being sold to an operator at Triente y Tres. Flown again on 25 September 1991, the Ag-2 had clocked up another 290 hours by 23 February 1993 before it was parked up at the airfield at Triente y Tres for seven years. Around 2000 the wings were removed and stored in a shed, while the fuse-lage was pushed to the edge of the airfield where weeds began to incarcerate it. In April 2003 the aircraft arrived in New Zealand for restoration, with 1091.2 flying hours. At some early stage the inside of the hopper was lined with fibreglass.. ...
And now I know that Hallett Griffin was the one to restore it : rnzaf.proboards.com/thread/12319/agricultural-aircraft-auster-agricola?page=3... Hallett Griffin is an ag pilot with a passion for older ag aircraft. His collection comprises of Beaver ZK-BDI, still working I believe, a Transland AG-2, an Edgar Percival EP 9, a turbine Zlin and now the Agricola plus all spares which I understand are sufficient to rebuild the prototype ZK-BMI which never came to this country. ...My Dad was an aeronatical engineer that worked for George Wing, so he knows almost everything about this plane. He would have signed his name to it before George painted it over, . If possible, I am looking for some recent color photos of the plane to show to my Dad. I only have black and whites. It would make my Dad's day to know that someone restored it. Any help on this would be fantastic! Thank You, Carlos

Peter Lewis -
Thank You! I can't wait to show these pictures to my Dad! It's like finding a long lost member of the family.

Hello -
I recorded my Dad talking about the Transland Ag-2 and put it on YouTube :
Transland Ag-2 Overview
I tried to add pictures that go with the interview, but I may have goofed in some places and/or "ran out of pictures", so you may see some repeats.
If you have some questions about the plane, then I will bring them to him, put them on YouTube, and add them to this thread. Please understand that I will be "asynchronous" to the request because my Dad is in his 80's, so I do things on his schedule.

Thank you Carlos!, I am in the initials stages of drawing plans for a Radio Controlled model of the Transland AG-2 when I came across this website yesterday, and am so grateful to you, for interviewing your father about his memories in designing such an important and unique aircraft in aviation history. It's a wonderful thing to keep the history alive and for your dad to relive a such an ever evolving time in agricultural aircraft. I could listen to his stories for hours! If he has any more stories to tell, regarding the AG-2, I would be more than happy to listen!
Thanks again, Brad

Another quick question Carlos. Do you or your father know what color the prototype AG-2 was painted?
Thanks, Brad

Another quick question Carlos. Do you or your father know what color the prototype AG-2 was painted? Thanks, Brad Hi Brad - Thank you for your response! My Dad has original blueprints for the Ag-2 and the ones used to make the "company models" for people to see before the plane was built. I will look into seeing how easy it would be to copy the blueprints for you. The original AG-2 was dark blue and white. The letters were white. He may have some color photos. It was not painted everywhere, but the dark blue on the top was so that it didn't reflect into the pilot's eyes. This is obvious to pilots but not to lay people like myself. Carlos

Hi Brad -
Another quick reply. Basically, any "dark/black" color you see in the black and white photos from the era is dark blue. The rest is white. The spinner was silver, but maybe that means unpainted?!?!?

Happy Thanksgiving Carlos!
Thank you for responding to my inquiry. Your information will be extremely useful in replicating The AG-2.
Growing up in Southern California, and still living here, I have a special interest in aircraft designed and built in the area, especially civilian aircraft, after WW II. Many people are familiar with Ag Cats and Pawnee and Thrush agricultural aircraft, but I always am attracted to the lesser known types, such as the Transland AG-2.
If you are able to copy any drawings of the AG-2, I would be extremely grateful! Let me know of any cost involved, as I will be willing to reimburse you for any costs involved. Also, you did a fantastic job creating the video interviewing your father about his part in designing the AG-2. That must have taken quite a bit of time editing and finding all the amazing photos you used to match what he was describing. If he has any more stories to tell, I am here ready to watch and listen!
I hope you and your family have a Great Thanksgiving.
Brad

That gives me great motivation to complete the model of the AG-2! To have one of its' designers see it, would give me great satisfaction.
Good to know you still live in the southland as well. I'm in North O.C. I'll keep you posted here with progress on the model.

Brad -
This is great! Now that we know you are doing this, we will be scanning the blueprints and other pictures at better resolution. I sent you a message with some other info.

Hello Carlos, I came across this link by chance when I was looking for data and possibly drawings for the Texas AG-1. However, when I saw the AG-2 I found it looked a lot more attractive. So I watched your YouTube presentation and was surprised to learn your father actually worked for the Company that designed the plane. Could you provide higer-resolution 3-view-drawings (from the beginning of the presentation) that show the AG-2 in pretty good detail, and what would you like in return? I am planning to design and build a radio controlled model of this aeroplane and these drawings would be an ideal basis for this purpose. Best, Michael

Hi Michaelb - I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. I sent you a private message. I am slowly compiling a set of images that anyone can download here : carlosgp.wikidot.com/We are doing this for Hallett Griffin's historical documentation of the AG-2. However, it is also for anyone who is also interested. Carlos

HI Carlos, I just happened to be reminiscing with my brother last about my dad Capt. Bat Masterson, who was the chief engineering test pilot on the Transland Ag-2 in Torrance, California in the late '50's. I was excited to come across this site and joined right away. I had no idea that this plane still existed. It's especially funny that I just happen to be going to New Zealand next week and will try to look up Hallet Griffin. I have quite a few b & white photos of the plane and a few of the people involved. Your dad may be in one of the photos. I also have his log books from the period that show the test flights. I'd be happy to get copies of any of this to you if you're interested. In the meantime I have to start looking for the owner of the plane in New Zealnd as I'll be there next week and have limited time there to visit, if able. Hope to here from you. Excited about this. Jim
