Photos of this extremely weird theme park in China, with the Soviet Navy's Kiev aircraft carrying heavy cruiser as a centre piece.
Binhai 12
Shenyang J-6 garden ornaments. Lots of these dotted about the place.
Kiev 2
The entrance to the ship is through its torpedo tube hatch. Note the giant matryoshka dolls at bottom right.
Kiev 16
Magazine loading bay for P-500 cruise missiles, the Kiev's main armament. Full scale reproductions stand in for the real thing.
Kiev 17
The hangar deck is full of scale models of aircraft that don't belong in a Soviet aircraft carrier, including this J-10 mock up sitting on the deck level lift.
Kiev 37
Nice to see the Soviet Navy thinking of every eventuality! Coca Cola emblazoned picnic tables welded to the deck!
Kiev 77
View of the flight deck from the flight commander's cupola; five Nanchang Q-5s and a Yak-38 mock up. Kiev operated around 12-13 short take-off/vertical landing Yak-38s, which were originally intended for vertical take off operations, but this was changed to enable each aircraft a payload increase. Whilst not as capable as a Sea Harrier, the Kiev/Yak-38 gave the Soviet navy a true blue water fixed wing aerial element.
Kiev 80
The Kiev's bridge is rather sparse.
Kiev 87
The Kiev and her sisters were formidably armed, with their main armament located forward of the tower.
Kiev 100
Retired from service in 1993, the ship sat derelict until bought by a Chinese entertainment consortium with the intent of converting it into a floating hotel, only a few rooms have been converted and to this day the 'hotel' has yet to receive guests. The 'theme park' opened in 2004 and although internally the Kiev no longer resembles the warship it once was, externally it is still an impressive sight.
Type 035 1
There's also a submarine, Type 035 Ming Class...
Type 051 9
And a destroyer, Type 051 named Chongqing, but non Chinese were not allowed on board these vessels!
Binhai 1
The oddness of Binhai is apparent everywhere you look. Ukranian girls are imported especially to work in shops selling Russian goods, and kitschy stuff appears at every turn.
