Beautiful weather here today and yesterday the same (guessing the Gods smiling o the Royal wedding!). Fantastic balloon show yesterday evening together with a small but excellent show by a numner of machines including Pete Davies' Calidus autogyro, Fournier and then Twister, Hughes 300 and Grob teams all fitted with pyros and LED ligthing. Very spectacular. Venue is sensational and they have marked out a runway on the side lawn of the Hall - mind you I figure its big enough for a B.17 or a Lanc. The balloons were sensational as well with one of the largest (motorcycle and rider) i have ever seen anywhere. I even commented that we were nowhere near |Parliament so how did they inflate it? The night glow set to music was very impressive (including Iwi the Kiwi) with the latrge number of balloons tethered there burning in time. Never seen a real one done before and it was quite the spectacle for the public. Airshow proper starts today with warbirds including P.47 fresh from repaint, Spit Mk.I, Blenheim, Bluntie, Sea Fury, ex-RNZN Wasp - cannot remember all of them off the top of my head now - plus aerobatic displays etc. Best head off now to the Hall and get my notes in order. Same again tomorrow. Lots of Kiwis there !!!

Thanks Pete. Yesterday perfect weather and same today. The P-47 looked and sounded great but displayed a bit far out and also made its turns well out of the public view. Catalina was very impressive. Unfortunately Sea Fury had to bail out enroute with an hydraulic leak. Spit and Blenheim looked sensational against the wooded backdrop but, the advertised Mk.I turned into a T.9....... some crowd mutterings there and I also apologised as I wanted to see a Mk.I. Everythine else went really well and lots of supportive comments for a "First Event". Show started after Royal wedding and finished just before the FA Cup.......never thought I would be commentating on a Royal wedding over a big screen telecast. Venue for this show is just sensational and |I hope that it has received the support ncessary for the organisers to continue next year.

The Auster was a crowd favourite as was the P.47 although a bit far away. Catalina had a very spirited display and would be good to see elsewhere. Great War Display Team, although only two, had the best pyros and so well done. Travelair Mystery Ship was a first for me. Mustang was a GREAT display by Eskil.... man was it hooting ! Fantastic venue and should be on again next year.

BTW, place was full of Kiwis and they all thought it was the UK equivalent to Warbirds over Wanaka and Omaka. Trev " The Token Pom" at Wanaka felt well at home with all the Kiwis there as he organised it. Wish I had worn my Wings over NZ T Shirt....but a couple recognised me from Wings over Wairarapa which was very gratifying.
