During a recent stay in San Fransisco I took a day off to visit the USS Hornet Museum based at the huge Alameda base (Now closed)
The preserved carrier CV12 was named after CV8 famous for the Doolittle raid on Tokyo and sunk in the battle of Santa Cruz in October 1942.
The museum on CV12 is run by volunteers and costs $20 for the days visit.
The Hornet has the company of some USN transports and these auxilarlies
The ship is open to wander around in including a steep climb to the bridge. The deck and hangars have a good population of aircraft
And there are a bunch of displays on CV12 service
