A Hunter Mk 58 has crashed into the sea near Sand Island, Oahu, soon after taking off from Honolulu. The aircraft was participating in an air defence exercise. The pilot ejected at a low altitude and survived with injuries. More here : aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=219404

Use of civilian aircraft in naval exercises (as well as other forms of military co-operation such as target towing) has been increasing over recent decades, although I think in Europe its history goes back to the early 1950s. However the wisdom of using fairly elderly high performance aircraft such as the Hunter, must be questioned by some - perhaps the alternative is to have no such training at all. Fortunately this one ended without loss of life, although it seems that this Hunter was aimed at an extensive CBD (Honolulu?), albeit it seems to have been abandoned in a nose high attitude presumably set up by pilot. Its nose attitude changed after the pilot departed, probably the change in C of G, but with a dead engine it was never going to stay pointing up for long. The aircraft had a high rate of sink at the time of the ejection. The seat in the Hunter is an early MB MK3, a zero/90kts seat, not a zero/zero. He did well to point it somewhere safe and to bang out early enough.

It amazes me that someone managed to catch it on video.

Several people did (video and stills), including a security camera looking down towards the beach.
