Yes, A8-141 crashed into the Hauraki Gulf in 1978, after the crew received a hot wheel well warning and the aircraft caught fire.
The escape module from this aircraft used to travel all around Australia to air shows, but is now a permanent exhibit at the Amberley Museum.

Still should be operational. Retired before their time.

Still should be operational. Retired before their time. I think you got that the wrong way round - should have gone years before - Replaced by 15E's

It's not the F-111's capability- it's was the cost of the keeping it going that was the killer. Armchair experts know better apparently.

Vs. F35's purchase cost and the ongoing drama it may have been prudent to hold on to them a little longer. The F15 is also reaching the end of its service life. Either way ourdependency on the US for military hardware is taking us down a slippery path if China and Russia's advances are to be believed. But this is only an armchair experts opinion.

I recall reading that it was costing around A$120 million/annum to keep 17 of the F-111 flyable near the end of their career.
Great aircraft, but it was the right time to withdraw them from service.

$20 million of that was probably dumped and burnt fuel at airshows
