I had not known there was an HMNZS Waikato before the time of the Leander class frigate with that name. But this one was built in New Zealand. STEEL MINESWEEPER LAUNCHED: H.M.N.Z.S. Waikato, largest steel vessel to be built in Auckland, was launched on Saturday morning from the Marine Department's construction yards. NEW ZEALAND HERALD, 18 OCTOBER 1943

NEW ZEALAND HERALD, 18 OCTOBER 1943 "New Zealand Naval Vessels". Waikato became the trawler "Taiaroa". A sister ship is derelict at Port Hutt on Chathams. Finally used in a film, "Savage Islands" in 1982. There is a bit of a tale after that.
