On March 14, 1944 Canadian Vickers Canso A RCAF Serial 11054 rolled off the production line in Cartierville, Quebec. The same aircraft alias CF-JCV, C-FJCV, Z-CAT and ZK-PBY has 75 years later & half a world away celebrated its 75 birthday in style. On Saturday, 16th March the Catalina Preservation Society undertook A 'Catalina Cruise' over the Gulf Islands and the Coromandel Peninsula, followed by dinner at Ardmore. Ahhh those rivets. Just like a trusty Airfix kit of yore

Some quite good scenery along the way too - Beautiful! One of my late uncles serviced the radio gear on our PBY-5s/PB2B-1s at Laucala Bay in 1946 - somebody had to do it. The main transmitters/receivers in the earlier Cats have been described as "they appear to have been designed for installation in battleships! They were huge, and very heavy, and answered to the name of GO-9, or so I've heard.

And the rivets on Airfix kits of Yore (and some others) were probably ten times the scale size, and even appeared on aircraft that were flush-rivetted in real life! Still, they were easily removed with some gentle file/sandpaper work.

Incidentally, Neil Young (who is trying to organise the new syndicate) is on far left of this photo
