Being a Kittyhawk, I think the bump is a fur ball. If it is actually a Warhawk, i've got nothing..

Yes it probably is an N-5, rather than an N-1 or M. And any of those models would make it a Warhawk.

It could be a shadow of the radio mast. I was looking at the P-40's undercarriage (the 3rd photo of the P-40 taking off) and I see that the wheels are just at the point of liftoff, the bottoms of the mainwheels are just barely touching the runway and also the ailerons are slightly deflected as well.

Yes, it could be shadow if you 'see' the lighter part of the bump as runway and the dark part as shadow. Sounds good to me anyhow.

It could just as easily be something like a mark on the PSP plating of the runway, or a speck on the negative or the print that this was scanned from. It's hard to tell if the aircraft taking off is a P-40N-5 as seen in that side on shot with the rear glazing, or is it a P-40M with the earlier canopy arrangement? I just looked at the markings on the vertical stabiliser, saw what looked like a big "1" and assumed it was actually the same aircraft in both photos. I guess I need to be more careful in my observations...

I new I had seen the side on view of the "54" P40 somewhere, this image features in Charles Darby's book, RNZAF The First Decade 1937-46, there are very few colour images in this book this being one of them. Just yesterday I purchased the most recent Flypast magazine which features a story on Sqn Ldr Guy Newton and RNZAF P40s in the pacific. The first and third image at the start of this thread feature in the article as do a few other images from Charles Darby's book. Adding to the trivia there is an earlier post from 2010,link below, showing the wide view image all be it reversed, wonder which way around is correct? rnzaf.proboards.com/thread/11796/rnzaf-40-colour-photoDirect link to reversed image. ww2aircraft.net/forum/attachments/p-39-pict0627-jpg.60149/
