Some might say "Another drop in the old standards. Now people will think the RNZAF are ruddy Navy 😄" Or alternatively a ‘progressive' and forward thinking Service that embraces a modern approach and promotes inclusiveness and diversity (including facial hair), and throws off the shackles of previous institutionalised standards which are no longer appropriate in todays society and embraces change etc…

Back in the 80’s we had an airman, Goober Hutt, test the waters somewhat. Was there ever a reg that stated you couldn't have dyed hair ? How about pink or purple dyed then ?

This is not really a new thing of course... Perhaps the first man to wear a beard in the RNZAF was Derm Hurley in 1941, only for a very short time, on a dare from his C.O. who reckoned he would not grow a full beard while on his month stint at Waipapakauri. Derm took up the dare and grew a bushy beard at the remote station. He then returned with it to his home station of Whenuapai and it was shaved off immediately after it was photographed. However there was also this chap, wearing a full beard in the Pacific. He was a member of No. 4 Servicing Unit at Torokina. This photo came from 4SU member Earl Wright's collection and was loaned to me to scan by Ron Hildreth, also of the unit, although he has no idea who the bearded airman was.

Policy applies to females as well. Inclusivity is of course the highest priority.

This has been sent through to me, a new policy announcement from the Chief of Air Force. This extract highlights the approved and non-approved beard types for the RNZAF - No 'Jason Derulo' beard styles but goatees approved as well...

re kiwiruna does not really matter when you have no fast jets but remember when I was in the mob a pilot complaining about his mask leaking even though he had the standard biggles half brush under his hooter

Can you have a Beard when flying fast jets? Don't all our jets (Boeing 757) now have cockpits so your beard won't blow away
