Hi All,
Just read through this whole thread. Awesome!!!
I had hoped to make a pilgrimage to see John's collection one day - My condolences to John's family - Blue Skies and following Winds to John.
The fantastic thing is, these are Time capsules into our Air Force's past and the Aircraft, especially the P 40's allow us to actually see (for the most part) the real colours of a P40E-1 and P40N -especially the cockpit of NZ3043 (it's not US Interior Green or Curtiss Cockpit Yellow Green!!!)
Thank you so much for posting these photos Hopefully more to follow??
Thanks/Regards
Alan

Marty Nicoll has kindly sent this through: "Correct stencil for Gloria......ALL model decals are not correct. You can post on the forum for others if you want."

The most important feature of these wings is the accurate realtime roundel. It would be great for forum members to get the actual measurements of the roundel size and bars as there are many variations and opinions on where and when for such markings. Also as they are in great condition paint wise, a comparison against the standard FS colour match would be appreciated, especially for the blue

Yup, I passed by the wings on the trailer going through Hope yesterday. Recognised the wings when I saw the gray colour and the round wheel wells! Parked outside the Wakefield bakery too!!

Now that's awesome!
They are in remarkable condition underneath aren't they. I feared when I used to see them at the bottom of the stack that they might be in worse condition than that. Brilliant colour, marking placement and other interesting details just in those photo's. Have the upper surfaces skins survived as well as the lower surfaces?
Interesting to still see the overspray around the white bars from when they were originally applied.
Thanks for the update.

Someone needs to go over that with a micrometer and FS paint chart. It is an unparalleled resource

"Gobsmacking" so good to see those wartime roundels as they were, the fabric in the wheel well and the fabric over the spent case ejection ports. I remember the restored Australian War Memorial P40 had these as well, I guess to stop mud, sand and coral dust from getting into the wing? Can't imagine what these machines will look like assembled!
Thanks so much to all involved for sharing these, magnificent, really beyond words!

Unfortunately, the upper surfaces are deteriorated - probably due to 20 years sun and rain exposure in the scrap yard. The other wing has a lower roundel in similar condition. Will post dimensions of roundels etc in due course.

As long as the skins and structure have survived ok then that’s more important

Amazing. Given their condition I assumed the wings had been inside all this time! Wow.
Thank you Mike for sharing these photos. Every new post is a real thrill!

It’s just like Christmas for big boys! Well yes - it is pretty neat working on this stash with mates - researching the history, moving the parts, talking to the family - but also a lot of hard work... Cheers Hvd1041

Some interesting photos of NZ3220 on the new airforce museum photo archive link that has just been posted. Search on "NZ3220" or "Gloria Lyons"

Yes - lots of inaccurate 'train-spotting' nonsense being put up on facebook - please, sensible 'Wings Over New Zealand' people, ignore it. The family ( and Curtiss & I ) are under no obligation to have any social media presence or detail any part of the process if we don't want to but, having said that, some accurate info will be updated here semi-regularly and I'm sure, in due course, a nice balanced article will appear in 'Classic Wings'. There is no plan to sell anything overseas, or do anything other than preserve the aircraft in a better state than currently stored. We all owe John Smith a debt for his far-sighted and hard work. He didn't suffer fools gladly, and we've no intention of changing that Cheers Hvd1041 This.

Spent yesterday moving the wings for Gloria Lyons NZ3220 from Mapua to Omaka. The wings are large and heavy to move requiring the assistance of many good people. It is interesting to see the white side bars for the blue pacific roundel reappearing as the later paint flakes off. Overall the wings are in great condition considering this is the first time they have been indoors since being delivered to NZ. IMG_1400 by Mike Nicholls, on Flickr I've just caught upon this awesome thread, Photos are just jaw dropping - Thank you so much for posting!!! Quick question for our RNZAF Museum Guru's (aka David D/Nathan) I'm picking the Blue/Green/Greyish paint on the above photo is the "NZ Sky Grey" painted on Return P40's/other New Zealand based aircraft circa 1944/45? If so, then it's certainly not the "Grey/Green" quoted by Darby in his book "RNZAF First Decade for Gloria Lyons NZ3220 (see page 73). I'm also grateful for the RNZAF Roundels showing what a faded RNZAF Roundel Blue from WWII actually looks like - this is a gold mine of information Thanks again for posting Regards Alan
