In email just out from Temora Aviation Museum, the announcement that Warbirds Down Under will be held on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October 2020. This is moving to a full, two day weekend airshow rather than the previous Friday afternoon-evening and Saturday airshow format.
The sub-title or theme of WDU 2020 is "Runway to 100 Years of RAAF".
Tickets for WDU 2020 to go on sale before Christmas this year, with those of you who are on the Friends of Temora Aviation mailing lists getting pre-pubic release notification for pre-sale ticket purchases.
If you are thinking of going, starting booking accommodation NOW! Once word gets out more broadly, anything reasonably close to Temora will soon be booked out.
Anticipate a few of the trademark WDU formations, especially those that are connected with the Centenary of the RAAF in 2021 and some new warbirds that will be debuting down under in the next 12 months.
I am looking forward to this.

Warbirds Down Under 2020 organisers have updated the Warbirds Down Under 2020 website with some initial information on the 2020 event, including their planned ticketing arrangements and ticket types. Instead of the previous "Gold", "Silver", "General Admission" and the like, for 2020 they have "Premium" in either the "Spitfire" of "Sabre" stands, plus will have a "Photographers Pit" in the location of the previous "Silver" stand, and "General Admission". Photographers Pit will be limited to 80 attendees in a bench seating style grandstand with capacity for 160, plus large area at ground level. So room for photographers to set themselves up with all their camera gear and have a bit of elbow room. Doesn't however overcome the orientation facing mostly into the sun of the display line, and then all the photographic enthusiasts who pay for the Photographers Pit will all pretty much have the same points of view for their photography. That'll restrict variety. Tickets to go on sale sometime in December.

That's a happy Mustang. Great to see it's finally airworthy again.

Hope we do get to see Mustang VH-SVU back in the air after such a long hiatus and certainly hope to see it more active at airshows in the future including at WDU 2020. If they can get a couple more of the Mustangs currently airworthy together, it would be nice to see a Mustang 4 ship formation following/preceeding a Spitfire 4-5 ship formation. Imagine the sound of all those Merlins!! Last time I saw SVU at Temora was back in late March 2011 when it was part of a commemorative event - I think they called it an air rally - of aircraft to Point Cook for the RAAF 90th. If my memory is correct, after leaving Temora it had an incident where it lost one of its exhaust stubs in flight, which came off and damaged the leading edge of the tailplane. It was not a participant at WDU 2011 or 2013. Anyhow, here are a couple from that last visit to Temora back in 2011. I think Pete Clements was behind the controls back then too. When the exhaust stub came off it was on its way to Tocumwal where many aircraft including Mustangs were scrapped......the boys went out looking where a great deal of parts were just thrown and "low and behold"... found an exhaust stub in perfect condition and the correct side.....Mustang continued on to Point Cook !

Ando, YES!! Thanks for jogging the memory. If I recall correctly, on one of the Australian warbird photography sites and forums that is no longer with us (Warbirdz?), one of the people there was participating in the event and they put up some photos of the damage to the tail plane, the remains of the stub exhaust - basically the flange and nuts - and the 'found' NoS exhaust stub from the heap at Tocumwal, plus a couple of other interesting bits that the guys found. I may have to go to my backup PC and have a look, because I may have "right click and saved" some of those photos because they were topical and interesting at the time. And found the event was properly called the RAAF 90th Anniversary Air Pilgrimage. I do have a stack of photos taken at Temora that day as it was a really interesting selection of aircraft that were participating, some that are sadly no longer active in the air for some years.

Apparently some of the RAAF hierarchy....but not near the top.....were not impressed with the pilgrimage.....escapes me why something to be the lead-in for the 100th Anniversary of Military Flight would be thought of that way.

Ticket pre-sale for this event is on now until 5 December 2019. If you are on the Temora and WDU mailing lists, you will get the email offering the pre-sale ticket purchase options.
Dang, I was quick off the mark, email came in clicked on link, purchased tickets, tickets 1 & 2 for the Photographers Pit.
Accommodation in Wagga already booked, my Navigator for the trip has gotten his time off work and is booking his flights, I love it when a plan comes together.

Where Silver Stand was last time, but many fewer people in the same area. So still looking into the same sun as everyone else.

Hi Calum, Photographers Pit is going to be where the Silver Stand was at WDU 2018. With the ticketing link they had the attached map below. Site-and-camping-map by Colin Ford, on Flickr So it is facing out to the airfield and flight line, to the right of crowd centre and the two Gold stands. Has the taxiway just in front of it that they used to circulate a number of the warbirds to and from the active runway. Advantages of the Photographers Pit vs General Admission is VIP/Premium access including VIP/Premium Car Park, somewhere to base yourself, marquee in Pit will apparently have power and charging stations, plus a bit more room to move if you are photographing compared to other areas. The sun in the face is just a fact for Temora like a number of other airshow venues.

To help people visualise the general view from the Photographers Pit, which will be in the same location as the Silver stand from WDU2018, the following photos might help. WDU2018 Flight Line Left by Colin Ford, on Flickr View out to the left of the stand, which is back towards the main apron which is directly in front of the VIP area and Gold Stands. WDU2018 Flight Line Centre by Colin Ford, on Flickr View to the front, showing the taxi way in front and how close some of the single seater warbirds pass in front of the area. WDU2018 Flight Line Right by Colin Ford, on Flickr View just to the right of the stand, further over to the right is the view to the holding point for the longer runway. Also as some of the aircraft used the grass 'cross' runway due to the prevailing wind direction and for traffic deconfliction, they take off and climb out closest to this area. Display aircraft will normally run in towards or come in over the back of the Premium/VIP zone, so you are offset from display central.

And is that a Beaufighter parked to the left behind the Halifaxes?? It's a bit like the speculation that arose after the artists concept drawings for the new Aviation Centre at Scone were released which showed a Beaufighter parked in one corner of the display space................ Now if the outline on the airfield plan was for an airworthy Lancaster or Lincoln................
