On the verge of finally opening, Christchurch International Airport's new Novotel Motel represents the new standard in aviation enthusiasts' viewing platforms and watering holes.

Having spent some 3 weeks working on site I am happy to provide a taste of the view from the top (restaurant and bar) and from suites (level 6 down) with grand views North and West of the main runway, control tower, and apron hosting international flights, military movements, and Antarctic Deep Freeze operations.

A lot is happening out my window. A Dreamliner is preparing for its long haul to Singapore, an explosive detector dog is having a sniff through luggage, and an enormous American military plane is being inspected - no doubt preparing for its busy summer down in Antarctica. And I can see all this without leaving bed.

Here's what to expect staying a night at the newly-opened Novotel Christchurch Airport, right next to the runway.

THE PLACE

The 200 room hotel has only been open a week, and sits just over 100 steps from the arrival hall. It faced a two-year delay opening, but some things are worth waiting for, especially if you like airports. And I happen to love them.

Sounds like a good place to stopover for a night or two when I will be there in early Dec, about the 3rd, before returning home via Changi.
