Roland Emmerich is not as bad as Michael Bay when it comes to action movies, but he's pretty close. For the most part, in Midway the historical events all occur in the right places but as they condensed two years into two hours it felt like the heroes were rushing between each event at breakneck pace. Add to that the rather shallow portrayals of real people, several glaring inaccuracies and outright omissions, and some interesting attempts at accents from British actors playing Americans. Where Emmerich got it right was with the Japanese side of events. The main Japanese parts were well cast, and for the most part well acted and you can see attempts were made to portray Japanese culture correctly. That's why it's so aggravating to see that Emmerich can do such a good job in one area but do shoddy work in others. So while kind of watchable I would not recommend Midway unless you are really bored and have a free copy to watch. Having said that, in my mind Roland Emmerich will forever rank above the likes of Christopher Nolan because he is not afraid to kill off pop stars appearing in his war movie!
