Info from the local police is now one fatality, and it was an ag-plane

The plane crashed in near-perfect conditions during take-off on a farm on Ruakiwi Rd, Kourarau Hill, Carterton.

The man, in his 50s, died at the scene. A fertiliser truck driver was also on site during the crash but was believed to be unhurt.

Police Inspector Scott Miller said it was a tragic situation and his thoughts were with the family of the dead man.

"It looks like they were taking off and something has happened on or around take-off."

It was a Ravensdown Aerowork pilot flying a Cresco. They are not yet naming the pilot of respect for the family.

The pilot of a topdressing plane which crashed in the Wairarapa hills east of Carterton will be sorely missed by his community.

Andrew Denniston, who was the sole occupant of the plane which crashed Friday morning as it was taking off, will be remembered as a "big-hearted, funny and loyal" family man.

Rachael Denniston said her father had "a lovely, laid-back attitude coupled with a wry smile delivering a very dry sense of humour with a good outlook on life".

"He had a life full with many stories, journeys and friends whom he always made time to keep in contact with."
