They used green tea and it tasted awful but was warm and sweet, and quenched the thirst, apparently. It was colloquially known as the Green River among the airmen.

Not to be confused wit the cool drink known as "battery acid", always available at most eating occasions - apparently not quite as strong as indicated by its nick-name, it was a type of lemon juice I think, lots of vitamin C. Read about that in a wartime "Contact". David D
