I discovered this free documentary on YouTube and thought I’d share here for those interested that may not have seen it before.
Would make an interesting prospect for RNZN given its capabilities. The flexibility of this vessel is incredible especially the specialised landing craft incorporated into the design.
Good back up for humanitarian and disaster relief (or when the cook strait ferries are on strike 😉)
Enjoy!

Just started watching this and yes it would be great for the RNZN to have this kind of capability, but we won't because it probably will cost too much, however the main reason will be it's designed and armed for war-fighting, somehow I don't think the French would be to keen to build one to civilian specs.

Nice to see all the NH-90s flying off this boat. Probably why NZ will never see this size vessel, as you would have to double the Air Force's fleet of NH-90s just to carry a flight on this size vessel. Closest we will get is our pilots and NH-90's will do the odd cross deck training with the Aussie LHD's. The second enhanced sealift vessel a proper LPD or even a small Endurance 170 class LHD... which I doubt... RNZAF NH-90 out and about nighthawk.nz/index.php/news/defence/2268-the-nh-90-out-and-about

Very similar to the Australian Spanish-built Canberra-class LHDs. I suspect this kind of ship is Ron Mark's ultimate dream but he knows it'll never get past any cabinet either national or labour.

The Mistral was what the Aussies originally wanted...

Hmmmm, I think the Mistral was also a French-manufactured Vampire ...

I thought they made fans and heaters.

I thought they made fans and heaters. Isn't that what the Vampire's engine is?! Errol

If this type of ship is what they are thinking. We are going to need more Helicopters.

There are smaller versions of this vessel, more in line with our needs and budget. the Mistral 140 is 140m long, 14,000 tons, well-deck and facilities for 10 helicopters.
