Propeller fell off plane before Ōtaki crash that claimed life of pilotJoel Maxwell 09:21, Aug 27 2020 A propeller similar to the one sought by the Civil Aviation Authority from a plane that crashed in Otaki. That propeller, believed to be somewhere near Ōtaki, had yellow tips.It appears the propeller fell off a plane in flight over the Kāpiti Coast town of Ōtaki before the crash that claimed the life of its pilot. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has asked Ōtaki residents for help in the hunt for the plane’s propeller, which is missing and believed to be somewhere near the township. The crash at Ōtaki airstrip on Monday, August 17, claimed the life of pilot Nigel Anthony Frederikson, 74, of Wellington. Frederikson was flying a Sonex amateur-built fixed-wing aircraft. The CAA said the accident took place between 12.55pm and 1.15pm in the Ōtaki area. They said the propeller, wooden with yellow tips, was “missing and is believed to be somewhere near the Ōtaki township”. “If you find the propeller, please leave it in its current position and photograph it.” Airstrip manager Rob Kofoed said Frederikson was a “very dedicated pilot”, often heading off on trips, and up flying out of the airfield most weeks. - If people have any information, contact 0508 472 338 or email isi@caa.govt.nz.
