Apparently there's a sealed airstrip (marked 01/19) out in Tinopai, I was given a set of coördinates... which merely led to a forest, Google Earth's historical imagery slider reveals that there was no airstrip in that location at any time between '04-'20. It should also be noted that this airstrip is a farm road w/ rwy markings. Anyone know anything more?

I just had to Google to find out where Tinopai is. I'd never heard of it.
What does that say in your middle name now Luis? And what is the language?

What does that say in your middle name now Luis? And what is the language? Good question Dave! It's in the Younger Fuþark runic alphabet (that funny p looking letter is called thorn in English and makes the th sound in thorn) used for Classical Icelandic Old Norwegian better known as Old West Norse and Old Swedish/Danish (Old East Norse). It says Ásbjǫrn which is a Classical Icelandic name and is presumed to be where English Osbourne/Osborne/Esbern comes from. The modern form is Ásbjörn/bjørn. ninja edit: Osbourne/Ásbjǫrn is taken as meaning Ursus Divinus or Divine Bear and links to a pre-christian taboo and religious tradition surrounding bears.

Thanks Luis. Interesting. I expected you to say it was Chile, haha.

Thanks Luis. Interesting. I expected you to say it was Chile, haha. Hmm, now that you mention Chile I reckon it's high time WONZ had a dedicated FACh thread in the Foreign Air Forces Board. But back to the topic at hand, if anyone on the forum has any idea who owns this airstrip, and where exactly it is (i.e what roads are near it) please let me know.

Tinopai (Maori for "very Good") is familiar to me as its my ancestral "Albertland" heritage.. Just across the Otamatea river from my Uncle's farm. No idea about a sealed airstrip though. The nearest established airstrips are at Maungaturoto, Ruawai and Dargaville, and those are all limestone chip surface. A sealed strip sounds pretty upmarket for that area of Northland, did Shane Jones visit?

Ha, was just in the process of typing this reply to say I'd flown over it on a cross-country once...

It was supposed to be a sort of gated community type of development 15-20+ something years ago. I'm not sure how far it got or if it's still going. At the time I knew who the developer was. Rhoda Morrison who holds the copyright to those 2 photos was an instructor at North Shore Aero Club and a real estate agent (I think) around that time.

Cheers guys! Maybe over summer I might make some inquiries, maybe get some photos of the strip from the ground.

I've flown over it many times and pointed it out to my students. I think I first "discovered" it on a cross country when I was a PPL and happened to look down and notice a road with threshold markings painted on it - very surprising!

I can remember the development and road construction which was about 20 years ago as you say (previously was a deer farm). I think the ownership of the property may of have changed once or twice since (sales were a bit slow initially). I drove past a year ago and and a few more houses had been contructed. Rhoda Morrison is still an active Real estate agent. She lives just up the road in Matakohe and probably a good contact for anyone wanting more information. www.roperandjones.co.nz/real-estate-sales-person/rhoda-morrison-8644

I'm going to repurpose this thread for questions about airstrips anywhere in NZ, rather than cutter up the forum with fifty posts asking "anyone know of a grass/sealed airstrip in 𝑥." With that in mind, I've been using this website (click on 'website') which has been rather useful in identifying airstrips, it's data is from LINZ and I've found it to be reliable. I noticed an airstrip (grass) right next to the Taotaoroa Quarries located at -37.904400, 175.645700 (link to google maps attached), however I'm not really if it is an airstrip. Any locals able to verify its existence (or non-existence)? Cheers.

I think there is a topdressing strip in there next to J. Swaps' quarry.

Heres the strip in 1966 when it was active. But judging by the trees on the threshold and the power wires running across the other end I would guess that strip hasn't been used for over 20 years.Theres thousands of unused topdressing strips all over NZ,Its fun spotting them when driving along through the country side.

My best mate Mike's Mum lived at 1400 Buckland Road from 2001 till 2015. Mike was living there off and on during that period too so I was often out there on the farm with him. Their place was right opposite the western end of Swap's quarry, have a look on Google satellite HERE
I certainly remember seeing a Fletcher operating from a strip there across the road a couple of times, maybe ten years back or so. I cannot place the strip in the 1966 photo on the satellite image. Whereabouts was it? When I saw the Fletcher operating it seemed to just rise off the hill east of where I was. I assumed it was a hill strip there.

Anyone know if the airstrip in Ōhinewai (lumsden rd), located at -37.467167, 175.160000 (click on the lat/long) is still around? It's supposed to be aligned 05/23 and shows up on most maps, but some don't show it. I briefly investigated the area myself after Black Sands 2020, but I was exhausted after being on my feet for so long so I feel like I may have missed it.
