As I had a couple of spare T56s left from previous Mach 2 build...I decided to start the SLOW build of another Convair...This is an Execuform vacform model so it took A LOT of confidence to make a start on it. I guess building all those vac-form Cessna 185s gave me the courage! Lots of careful measuring, copying templates off plans, checking & rechecking going on here... There are a few clues with cabin window layout that might give away the final livery?? Untitled by Harry Follas, on Flickr

progress so far, wings have been assembled with a mainspar in each which inserts into the fuselage sub-spars. The engines are attached and being faired in. The props are using P3 hubs this time (just temp tacked on). The shape looks pretty good, I'd have to say probably better than the Mach 2 Injected molded kit. Yep, would have to say it comes up better (shapewise) than the Mach 2 Convair kit, its been a fun build although I learned the hard way when I put the model upside down in the sun (to dry some glue) on a hot surface & it melted the canopy!! Execuform Convair by Harry Follas, on Flickr I have been scribing lots of panel lines & control surfaces from templates. The landing gear is a combination of P3, HS.748 and scratch bits as is the cockpit interior (P3, B25 and scratch). Great work Harry, she's coming up great! I was wondering a while back how difficult making a 580 out of the Execuform kit would be as I'd like to build some iteration of my neighbour ZK-CIF. although I learned the hard way when I put the model upside down in the sun (to dry some glue) on a hot surface & it melted the canopy!! Oh dear! The last few days have been so hot I haven't been at the bench for fear of paint doing weird things. Your experience reminds me of when I was 11 or so and Dad built an Airfix Red Arrows Hawk for me, rattlecanned the red, and put it in front of a fan heater to speed up the drying process...the end result was one S-shaped wing and the world's first - and hopefully only - droop-snoot Hawk!!

Hahaha! Yep, heat and styrene certainly don’t mix! The cockpit (canopy) roof of this convair is clear vacform plastic...so analogy would be pouring boiling water into a plastic water bottle! Execuform models come up really well BUT you need a strategy (and lots of spare parts) to build one as you aren’t provided with too much ‘out of the box’ to build one.

getting some paint...I considered doing it as 'KFL with the 'Toroa' on the side...but... This will be 'FTA in original Air Freight NZ 'Parcelpost' markings. I'm pretty happy with this vacform the way it came out...I reckon it looks better than the Mach 2 kit CV580 by Harry Follas, on Flickr CV580 by Harry Follas, on Flickr CV580 by Harry Follas, on Flickr

thanks guys, this is the 2nd Execuform model I've built (the other was the G-73 Mallard), they come up surprisingly well but you definitely have to plan out how you are going to tackle them! There aren't too many clues or parts offered in what Execuform offer you !!

It seems I have another couple of Mach 2 conversions underway... The retirement of CIB has landed me a couple of commissions. Have to say that Mach 2 plastic is such crap! Only by using excessive amounts of Milliput is construction even possible! I'm also contributing to the demise of Hasegawa P3 kits (just for their engines...a bit akin to catching sharks for their fins! ) Untitled by Harry Follas, on Flickr Untitled by Harry Follas, on Flickr Untitled by Harry Follas, on Flickr

Hear hear, what beauties! And knowing they're from Mach 2 kits adds a whole other level!

Great work! By the way, I have a full set of Hasegawa engines and props from a scrapped Hasegawa P-3 Orion model. Let me know if you want them for future Convair projects.
