Those metal "VR" badges (officers only) distinguished RAF personnel through much of WW2; airmen received simple cloth badges for same purpose, although as the RAF was probably about 90/95% RAFVR by end of that war, their retention became rather less meaningful or useful. Airmen seemed not to be issued with them later in that war, probably as an economy measure.
