Hi all,
Does anyone know what the arrangement is for moving post and parcels about the country (domestic only) by air? For example, does NZ Post hire space on AirNZ flights?
Thanks.

I am not certain if it is still the case post-COVID but they used to have a contract with Airwork who fly special mail aeroplanes. Airwork used to be the F-27 Friendships but they retired, and they now use some of their 737's.

Thanks Dave. So if they’re 737s I guess they only operate out of the major airports, and therefore only the larger cities?

Thanks Dave. So if they’re 737s I guess they only operate out of the major airports, and therefore only the larger cities? Mail goes by trucks these days. If it does fly it goes Auckland Christchurch return or Christchurch Palmerston North return. It could even go by DX Mail and not only be quicker but delivered to your post box every day! Try searching the blogsite 3rd Level, all about NZ third level airlines.

Parcelair is contracted by the NZ Post/Freightways NZ contract holder to move freight and mail within New Zealand by air. Parcelair provides crew and manages the business. Airwork provides four NZ based Boeing 737-400F, crew training, and engineering support.
Parcelair conducted trans Tasman flights throughout 2020 between Auckland, Christchurch and Melbourne as part of the Covid19 'lifeline' response on behalf of the New Zealand Government.
A limited amount of urgent mail is often moved inside the spare belly space of domestic scheduled passenger flights during the day.
There are no turboprop freight flights, the last being the Convair which was contracted for exclusive use by Freightways and recently ceased operation. The Friendship and Metroliners are long gone from the freight scene.
You can find the various flights on trackers using the airline code APK.

Hope this answers your questions and puts to bed any confusion about who is operating what. Happy to answer any further questions you might have about the operation. I don't log in often so please be patient if you do ask anything.
