What a great set of photographs of ZK-CIB in her "Twilight" The Coming and Going of the Convair in New Zealand The Convair Company, was an American aircraft manufacturing company that later expanded into rockets and spacecraft. The company was formed in 1943 and in 1953, it was purchased by General Dynamics, and operated as their ‘Convair Division’ for most of its corporate history. In 1994, most of the company's divisions were sold by General Dynamics to McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed. The popular Convair CV-340/440 design with it’s three bladed Pratt & Whitney Radials led to the CV-580 conversion, when fitted with two 4,000 shaft horsepower Allison turboprop engines with four-bladed propellers. The engines are compatible to those fitted in both the Hercules and Orion military aircraft. The aircraft cruises at 285 knots at a normal operating altitude of 22,000 feet, making this the fastest multi-engine turbo-prop aircraft in operation in NZ. The CV-580 was introduced to NZ Skies in 1989 and Air Chatham introduced ZK-CIB to the Chathams on the 29th of July 1996. There have been 14 Convair 580 aircraft registered in NZ of which Air Chatham have owned 9 namely ZK-CIB, ZK-CID, ZK-CIE, ZK-CIF, ZK-KSA, ZK-KFH, ZK-KFL, (ZK-KFJ & ZK-FTA for parts) ZK-CIB is undoubtedly the most special to Air Chathams and its owner Craig Emeny. And not just because it was the first Convair 580 purchased by the business but due to the versatility it provided the Chatham Islands community due to it multi-role configurations of passengers and cargo. The aircraft enabled significant growth in the seafood export industry including live crayfish and abalone. And provided greater seat capacity than the smaller Metroliner aircraft to develop the islands tourism industry over the past 25 years. We have been able to charter it once more for it’s last return passenger flight to the Chatham Islands during August. Remember this is the last passenger Convair flying anywhere in the world. chathamislandtours.nz/

What a great set of photographs of ZK-CIB in her "Twilight"... ...The popular Convair CV-340/440 design with it’s three bladed Pratt & Whitney Radials led to the CV-580 conversion, when fitted with two 4,000 shaft horsepower Allison turboprop engines with four-bladed propellers. The engines are compatible to those fitted in both the Hercules and Orion military aircraft... Well they aren't exactly compatible with Hercules or Orion, which ARE higher rated versions of the military T-56! However engines & props are DIRECTLY COMPATIBLE with the Lockheed L-188 Electra
