Hi Team. Another puzzle:
c/n 94001 - G-AFRD / VH-AAQ (ntu) / ZK-AHI / NZ596 / ZK-ALN.
airhistory uk (http://www.airhistory.org.uk/dh/p940.html) however, list the following:
c/n 94001 E-3 / G-AFRD Crashed Hatfield 11.4.39
c/n 94006 Replacement for c/n 94001.
Question - was the data plate from 94001 transfered to 94006?
Over to you.

antonio. My records show G-AFRD as going to Leicestershire Aero Club in early 1939 only to be withdrawn from use on 23/8/39 and exported to Australia in February the following year. Registered VH-AAQ it made its first flight there on 7/6/40 and its last a month later on 9/7/40. Exported to NZ it made its first flight there, presumably from Rongotai where it was most likely assembled at the new de Havilland workshops, on 27/9/41 as ZK-AHI. To RNZAF the following year as NZ596 then back on the civil register in September 1946 registered ZK-ALN.

G-AFRD reg 4Apr1939 cr Hatfield 11Apr39. rebuilt with fuselage 94006, ff 24Apr39. UK CofA 15May39. Demonstrator. S.Abd @ 118Hrs 15min, reg canc 21Feb1940. G-INFO gives no entry for Leicestershire Aero Club, though it may have operated there on loan.
Throughout its time on the UK register the c/n 94001 remained unchanged.

Peter, seems to be some confusion regarding G-AFRD early ownership. AHSNZ register gives the owner a Leicestershire Aero Club from an unrecorded date in 1939 until it was cancelled from the British register on 21 February 1940 preparatory to export. Will make further inquiries with a knowledgeable UK friend. Madmax

Does the serial number imply that she was the prototype?

A.J.Jackson's British Civil Aircraft 1919 -1950 gives the markings of the prototype as E-6, later G-AFSD

Madmax Out of curiosity I have looked into the 94001 / 94006 mystery and have found this comprehensive record of the airframe. www.goodall.com.au/australian-aviation/dh94/dh94mothminor.htm To cut to the chase, the original 94001, G-AFRD, crashed and was destroyed by fire on 11 April 1939 when being flown by Geoffrey De Havilland Junior and John Cunningham. Both men successfully baled out. The documentation, including rego G-AFRD, was transferred to another airframe (94006) for "simplicity's sake". I have also recently seen the registration cards for ZK-AHI (first NZ civil rego prior to impressment) and ZK-ALN (post-war rego) and neither card has a serial number other than 94001. Our CAA simply applied the details that were provided after the aircraft arrived from Australia who similarly had gone with what had happened in England with the transfer of identity from G-AFRD(1) to G-AFRD(2). Trusting this sorts out any remaining confusion.
