I am just wondering, do the C-5 Galaxy transports still visit Operation Deep Freeze at Christchurch International Airport these days? Or is it all just C-17's and C-130's nowadays?

The C5 hasn't been on supporting Deep Freeze ops for a while now since around 2011 its the lc130's & Mc Chord based C17's for the main runs but Stewart based C17's bring the spares & other associated stuff out before the season really gets going.

Didn't they retire most of them?

A good number of them yes but some have been converted to C5m specifications with newer engines, avionics & several other upgrades from the earlier examples which improves there serviceability by a considerable margin.

Thanks, I thought that was the case that they no longer visit New Zealand.

I’m not sure if this one ever visited NZ but it did have some Kiwi visitors. Timid little pussycat escaping the gaping maw, Harlingen, Texas 1979. C5A_FM5_1979 by Ron Wilson, on Flickr

A really amazing sight is to see multiple C.5s doing circuits at Travis AFB, California and at Kelly in Texas.....only in America.....

Stopped at Travis for two nights way back in 1976, en route UK to NZ. My resounding memory was the continuous whine as numerous C-5's pounded the circuit most of the day and until very late at night.

There was a C-5 in ChCh on 22 Feb 2011 - Earthquake day. Along with quite a few other USAF transports on the ramp. They departed the next day once the airport reopened - and I was a little surprised didnt take part in the relief effort or the evacuation as far I can remember.
