This is interesting. The NZ Herald headline made me smile 'NZ out in the cold as US, UK and Australia sign landmark security deal' I was wondering why I was feeling a little chilly.

A perfect place for US and UK to dump their nuclear waste, Australia.

Yes, typical clickbait headlines from New Zealand's esteemed media outlets (Newshub has a carbon copy one). Given that NZ isn't in the submarine game (certainly not the "nasty" nuclear variety) and other advanced defence projects, we were never going to be "in the room". I don't see either Paris or Beijing being too pleased.

Certainly a big call by Australia, it will impact their trade relationship with China and the complexities of building something like a Virginia class boat without any real prior experience will be a huge and very expensive exercise. The US has maintained a policy of building at least one submarine every year for the last forty years to ensure that the skills and knowledge required are always available. This will be interesting to follow.

Certainly a big call by Australia, it will impact their trade relationship with China. They already have smashed our big exports basically everything other than iron ore and even that are looking elsewhere. Guess its what you get standing up to bullies. They were nice enough to give us a list of demands..all basically meant give up your sovereignty. The French will be mighty mad. Maybe an order of those lovely Rafales might calm them instead of more F35s..

A very smart move, the French deal was a dog - $40BN & years of delays when the threat from China is real here and now. It needed to be scrapped. Also pleased to hear Tomahawks for the Hobart class destroyers are being acquired and JASSM-ER (AGM-158B) for the RAAF to compliment the shorter range JASSM's already in service. As for commentary of NZ being 'left out in the cold' - what rubbish, there are alliances already in place and the deal was specific in its aims of introducing nuclear propulsion into the ADF for the first time. Comrade Clueless and her deluded 1980's response of "well they won't be able to come to NZ" says it all really Never felt happier about paying taxes than I do when I see good and progressive defence spending - and there will be more

No, that's your job. The subs are not going to be nuclear armed, just powered and that alone is going to reduce the number of ports that will welcome them, not just NZ that has been antinuclear since the 60s. The current Govt is only continuing policies in place by successive Govt's. Comrade clueless, we can see who is clueless - '11sqnldr'

This thread probably belongs in with the ANZAC cousins not over here with foreign navies. :-)

It Sounds like a good arrangement. I would Imagine the new Aussie boats will be based on the Astute class, but with combat systems from the Virginia Class. From what I understand, the Astute Class is pretty close to what Australia wanted, but they have long had a preference for US Weapons systems. The fact they cant visit many ports due to Nuclear free rules isnt an issue, as they are intended to base out of HMAS Stirling and transit undetected to "waters north of Australia". They are unlikely to ever need to visit NZ anyway. A Collins Class has only ever visited New Zealand once, in 2016 for the RNZN 75th anniversary. They spend all their time well away from New Zealand, so the fuss over them not being welcome in NZ is irrelevant.

The rumours had a "passable, but debateable" level of substance to them.....after yesterday and the birth of AUUKUS, I suspect there'd be some smiling faces in the RAAF looking ahead to the 2nd half of this decade.

In the long term, China's interest in the Antarctic's natural resources might see the deployments of submarines and other military forces south of Australia. But, meanwhile, I wonder what kind of impact the RAN's submarine fleet going nuclear will have on the NZDF? Of course, personnel exchanges are affected, but I am less certain concerning joint exercises with the ADF.

If we could afford to buy one....we couldnt afford to operate it. I think more likely the fourth F.35 squadron may be created...resurrect No.78 please at Amberley

But what are the P8s going to hunt it training as we couldn't possibly play with Aussie nuclear subs?

But what are the P8s going to hunt it training as we couldn't possibly play with Aussie nuclear subs? NZ has participated in Fincastle exercises before with UK or French nuclear subs what's changed?
